SpeedHack 2007

I participated, did you? For those of you that don't know, SpeedHack is a 72 hour game programming competition. This is my first SpeedHack, although I've been a member of the Allegro community for two years now. Despite the lack of sleep on one of the three days, it was a really great experience.

Feel free to check out the game that I made:

It sounds like a pretty exciting competition, however, I never heard of it untill now Silly

But the idea sounds great. (Is it already over? Sad)

Well since it only lasts three days and he has already finished, I would say that yes, it is over Wink

So you create an entire game in just three days? Graphics, coding, everything? That is pretty intense, considering I can't get my physics homework done inside a week (cause I am a slacker Silly)

That is pretty good for the limited amount of time you have. Is there a place to see the other submissions?

Yes, you can see all of the submissions by clicking on Entrants.

Everything has to be completed (code, graphics, music) during the three days of the competition. Well, that's not exactly true, you can re-use certain code fragments (such as libraries or a difficult algorithm), if you properly cite your source (for libraries, if it's a non-standard and not Allegro library). And you can technically use graphics and/or music off the internet, if you really want to, but that's kinda against what SpeedHack is.

SpeedHack is really fun, but you've gotta give some stuff up (like sleep and socializing) for a weekend if you really want to finish. Even then, most games aren't that great. I haven't played all of the submissions yet, but so far there are two game that I like better than mine. All in all though, I think I did a pretty good job for my first SpeedHack (and only the third real game I've ever actually finished).

Not quite Speedhack related, but it involves Allegro:

I haven't quite gotten the hang of the Allegro library yet, but I'm undertaking a rather fun project that involves labyrinthes of caverns...

Labyrinthes of caverns filled with zombies.

It took me three days just to set up my IDE and work out map generation. Save states aren't in, zombies aren't in, pretty much nothing but wandering around a 4-billion map wasteland is in.

Still, that wasteland is pretty awesome to wander around. I'll probably be posting about it as it gets closer to completion.

I'd like to take part of that contest but I don't exactly have enough time left to do so.

I think I might join next year actually, since I really like the idea, though I have to learn how to use allegro first, since I'm used to SDL, and I've never really used allegro before.

Allegro is really easy. Just look up a few tutorials on using timers and anyone can really make a game. All of the functions and stuff are named what you would think they would be named (although they use underscores instead of camel case) and take parameters that make sense.

I'm actually used to underscores for function names and camelCase for variable names.

I'm odd.

To me, that seems pretty strange. I prefer my code to be uniform in the same style (variable names, function names, even source file names, one reason that I really dislike Java.
