Hello there, haven't been in here for a while...
For last couple of days I have this strange problem, explorer service crashes every time i start Windows Explorer, did anyone have similar problem and or knows a potential solution. The PC specs are irrelevant and the OS is XP.
I did install some programs but I uninstalled them and did virus and spyware check with NOD32 and Spybot. Found no problems.
Any idea ? _________________ ¤¤ RELENTLESS, PERSISTENT, UNYIELDING, UNREMITTING, INEXORABLE

Have you recently installed any new programs/software? Or drivers or anything?
For some weird reason once i installed RocketDock, and windows explorer kept crashing for no real reason but stopped as soon as i uninstalled it.
You might try doing a system restore to the point before all the problems started happening, and see if that solves anything. _________________ http://www.snapcite.com | http://www.rootsOfevil.com | http://www.MJHQ.com |

Strange how I always forget about System Restore option.
Yeah I did install few programs and uninstalled all of them, but it seems some files weren't deleted...
Okie thank you scar. Problem fixed. _________________ ¤¤ RELENTLESS, PERSISTENT, UNYIELDING, UNREMITTING, INEXORABLE

Sometimes installing those updates that Microsoft sends your way can crash your system. It actually happened to me once, had to reinstall and everything. You can try a repair install of windows, it'll solve the problem most likely. _________________ Tarakana NET |

Once I have tried to uninstall IE6 and installed IE7 on XP, but that did not solve all of the crashing problem. And I also had tried to repair install XP before that, only helped a little. The best way is to remake the whole system, from the very beginning part, format C:\
By the way, the problem I have met was caused by virus infection. |

| I hate troubleshooting, it takes alot of my energy and time. If I have had this problem, I will re-install the entire computer clean, from a backup image. That should solve most of the problem. |

At times you will encounter strange things happening on your system. By the time you resolved it you would have wasted months.
First option, always try System Restore. This always work for me.
Second option, if System Restore doesn't work, backup all files, restart again.
Repairing your installation may cause you to lose your files. I have never tried it, but I assume so, because the other time I tried repairing an installation on a brand new computer (that is, I don't have to worry about data), and I had to go through the installation again. It somehow makes me worry that it may be a reinstall, overwriting all files.
Anyway that is just what I think. It may not be so.
But always be safe. Do a backup. _________________ 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592307816406286208998628034825342

Reinstallation doesn't affect your files and settings. I think it was the cause for my theme to revert to Windows XP default and I had to re-patch a system file to enable third party themes again but nothing else was lost.
I don't blame you Jacky for thinking that though. The first time I done a reinstall or "repair install" got me paranoid as the setup screens look very similar to those from a fresh install. And I don't backup so it was a big relief to see everything still up when I came back. At the time, the theme change was barely an issue.
I should point out I use a data partition so if the OS crashes, the data partition is not affected when the OS partition needs to be formatted (in case you think I'm cuckoo for not backing up). |

But somehow the other time when I tried doing a repair install, the installation froze. I restarted the repair install and it did the same thing. _________________ 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592307816406286208998628034825342

As far as I can tell, running a repair installation simply replaces all the system files, but it doesn't touch any personal files. _________________ "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." --Thomas Jefferson
