|
|
If you have ever noticed, when a city builds a new structure it lets companies purchase naming rights.
Recently here in wichita, Intrust Bank purchased the naming rights for a new Arena that is being built. So its going to be called "Intrust Bank Arena".
I just think the whole idea of allowing companies to buy the name is retarded. Why not come up with a cool unique name that you can actually use?
Anyways I thought that name was bad. Turns out there is actually a "Taco Bell Arena" ha, which is even worse. http://www.tacobellarena.com
Has anyone ever noticed cities allowing companies to buy the name? And then they stamp some lame name on it?
The only name so far that i like is "Sprint Center", which is the Arena in Kansas City. I only assume the communication provider "Sprint" bought the name, but it actually sounds nice.
Anyways this was just on my mind and i decided to rant a little bit, but you must admit how lame it is.
Some entertainer is going to book a gig at the "Taco Bell Arena" ha. _________________ http://www.damnidunno.com |

Some are okay, after hearing them enough that they become household names. We have the "Telstra Dome" which sounds acceptable and even "Vodafone Arena" isn't that bad. "The Emirates" too. And with the former, you can even cheat and call it "the Dome".
The two you listed though are terrible! The first one for including the word "Bank", not that "Intrust" sounded any good, and "Taco Bell", well, that's pretty self explanatory as you pointed out with that comment at the end
But then, the stadia might not see the light of day if this sort of revenue isn't available. The naming right sell often in millions, and I recall correctly, the Emirates (Arsenal's ground) cost 200 million pounds for the naming right. |

| Quote: | The arena is budgeted to cost $185 million and is financed by a temporary, $.01 increase in the county sales tax. The increase, which will expire after 30 months in December 2007, was approved by voters 52% to 48% in November 2004.
On January 10, 2008, the city announced it had reached a 25-year, $8.75 million naming rights deal deal with Intrust Bank, which complements a 20-year, $3 million deal with Cessna Aircraft Company to name an adjacent outdoor plaza, and a councourse area deal with Spirit AeroSystems. |
I think the the city should've had the tax on a bit longer, to cover any additional cost to get are real name that isnt embarrassing and completely retarded. I'm sure alot of people would have allowed it. Hell i would've paid higher sales tax for a while longer just to have a nice name.
Still isn't as bad as taco bell arena _________________ http://www.damnidunno.com |

Taco Bell Arena is pretty bad. I know around here we have a music venue named after Verizon Wireless. Another town I know of has a Movie Gallery Amphitheater. _________________ Gloria Fidelis: A Steampunk Fantasy |

I'm not a fan of naming rights either. The biggest one around here is "AAMI Stadium," which was formerly known of "Football Park" (Australia Rules Football), or, as most locals liked to call it "Footy Park."
By placing their brand all over the stadium, they're ruining some of the charm of the game. Although, there are a couple of news presenters that still call it Football Park, which makes me happy
The other one that bugs me (although not a structure) is the interstate cricket competition. It was known (for about 100 years up to 1996) as the "Sheffield Shield." It was then changed to the "Pura Milk Cup." The next one though (starting towards the end of the year) will be again known as the Sheffield Shield, which again makes me happy |

It doesn't really bother me at all - although it might if some company tried to change the name of Rugby Park (home to my beloved Kilmarnock FC - yes, it's a football stadium, not a rugby ground!)
Grounds i know of here, named for sponsors or the company that built them are:
Tulloch Caledonian Stadium - home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC, built by Tulloch Construction.
Emirates Stadium - Home of Arsenal FC, sponsored by Emirates Airlines.
JJB Stadium - Home to Wigan Athletic FC and Wigan Warriors (rugby). Sponsored by JJB Sports.
The O2 Arena - formerly the Millennium Dome, in London. Sponsored by O2 (a telecommunications company). However, this is an events arena (concerts and the like), and not a sports arena.
Must admit though - the Taco Bell thing is a bit silly. I heard this mentioned somewhere years ago and it struck me as a bit silly to have a sports arena named after junk food! Only in America eh?
Still - needs must. If it was a choice between my team going out of business, or taking a massive sponsorship deal from, say, Pizza Hut, i'd let them slap that hut roof on there and live solely on pizza til i died! |

| Theres quite a big stadium in Glasgow thats named after an erectile dysfunction or impotence drug, the home of Glasgow Rangers "Ibrox" is a drug manufactured by Murray and Proddey Pharmaceuticals. The club were on the verge of collapsing until the proddeys came to town and rallied support for the cause. Its a little Orange pill that apparently gives you a raging hard on for upto 5 hours but has the side effects of making your speech incoherent, persistent use makes people have the IQ of a 7 year old and want to fight with anyone wearing green. "King Billies" is the street name illegal peddlers of this filth call it |

Yeah, where I live we have the Wacovia spectrum (obviously by wacovia bank) and then theres the PNC arena, also a bank. I don't like either of the names but then again, there aren't too many names that I do like. _________________ "You Cant Keep Going to the Chicken Coop with Blah Blah on Your Mind When All You Have is Hot Sauce in Your Glove Compartment." |

Haha I didn't know this. Every where I lived the arenas were named after famuos people from the town or named after the town itself. Like the James Brown Colosseum, or my current residence in Charelston its only has the North Charelston Civic Center.
Thats funny how other cities allow companies to do that, god I could see some horriable things like "The Vagisal Arena" lmao. |
