I've been to China (Beijing) last summer (a week before the Olympics). Apart from Beijing being foggy and very industrial on the outskirts, I really enjoyed the scenery. There are many beautiful buildings and China's cultural history is indeed interesting.
However, if I recall correctly, there was a time when the Chinese Communist Party wanted to get rid of many of China's cultural relics. Fortunately this time is now gone.
One of the things that bothered me in China is the active censorship. I believe the press is not allowed to criticise the government. The Internet is also censored (I couldn't read the New York Times online, for example).
In my opinion this is not a good thing, because it prevents people from knowing what is going on in the country and the rest of the world.
China is also criticised for violating basic human rights. I didn't notice any of this while I was in China (fortunately, I guess), but it is pretty much common knowledge that it does happen.
Considering that you live in China, I'm not sure whether discussing this could get you into trouble, though. _________________ If you can read this, my post is on an alternating background. |

This photo was taken in the city of Nanning by Robert Daboss, in which this billboard shows Chairman Mao, Deng Xiaopin and Jiang Zeming looking at the modernization efforts underway.
“Let’s strive together to revitalize Nanning”, the poster board reads
In China, tremendous progress has been made in reform, opening up and modernization, which was intiated by Deng Xiaoping over the past two decades.
Beneath the board, a sanitary worker is also on camera, watering the plants for use in improving Nanning’s urban landscapes.
While many of the National leaders in China have made a deep and lasting difference in the life of Chinese people, ordinary people like him are also performing their service to make China a better place. |

I would love to visit China, I have heard it is quite a beautiful country.
I don't think I want to visit the major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but rather travel through the countryside and visit the smaller towns. I went to New York City and didn't like that so much. Oh! Backpacking in China would be so amazing! And of course I would have to visit the Great Wall of China because... that is a tourist thing to do
I think when a lot of people criticize China, they forget that China isn't the government, but rather the people in China. Just like with the U.S.! I guess when other countries think of the U.S. they think first of our leaders and our government and forget that the rest of America actually has something resembling a brain (or at least parts of it do). _________________ Rashy! |

This statement cannot be further from the truth. One has to remember that the borders of a country are artificial constructs set up by politicians and diplomats not by the people, so-called, and that governments are not the people of any country be it China or the US. Governments take it upon themselves to represent the people within the borders of their country but in fact they do not. They represent their own special interests or those who are allied with them but they do not represent the people.
The false doctrines of democracy, in whatever form it may take, communist or not, have all claimed to represent the people but this not true in the least. Countries do not exist except as lines on a map that can and do change on a whim. Countries have no right to exist nor do their leaders have any moral force to govern. The regime governing China has no more right to govern the people within its borders as does the regime in the US. Elections pretend to give a form of legitimacy to these regimes giving it the veil of popular support but even popular support does not legitimize any regime.
Countries do not exist, governments do not exist except by the force of arms and some form of common consent. Common consent really has only three forms: apathy, fear and rage. Apathy is what we generally get in the western democracies. Fear is what you get in communist and fascist type governments. Rage is what you get when the people are fed up with both. The latter tends to topple the governments of both as well to be replaced not with something better but with more of the same. _________________ Misanthrope: someone who realizes that humans really are as stupid as they appear.

I don't know much about China, I've heard it's a beautiful and unique country, I've also heard stuff about the Communist regime there that controls people a lot, much like in the former Soviet Union. I guess I'd like to visit someday and see for myself. _________________ Tarakana NET |

Seems that people in China have more freedom that in the past, such as to own property and business. Even when the government wants to acquire land for a large construction project, people can put up some resistance if they don't want to move. As far as controlling the flow of information, may countries who supposedly practice democracy have some form of censorship, so they could be similar to China. _________________ BMW art cars |

I've never been to China, but it sure sounds like the government does its best to promote a culture of over-enthusiastic national pride and ignorance of any problems.
I remember reading an article about children getting kidnapped and the parents were trying to put up some posters and notify the media to try and find him again - by they were stopped by the police for causing a "ruckus". Maybe the Chinese don't mind so much, but I'm too much of an individualist to agree with that sort of stuff _________________ Check out my blog! http://nacht.l2p.net |
