Google seems to use a different set of tricks. It recognises similar images where the subject has a different orientation and it can distinguish between content such as clip-art, line drawings, photos and even faces.
It's actually pretty cool. I wonder if they have indexed their entire image archive yet. _________________ If you can read this, my post is on an alternating background. |

While Google's "Similar Images" thing looks interesting enough, it's not at all like TinEye, because you can't enter your own image to compare, but rather have to search by keywords or themes. Overall, it seems to me that the Google service probably doesn't analyze the image itself at all, relying on keywords instead.
Why do I think that? Because I ran my username and got some results from my site... Had they actually been able to analyze and compare images, it would have been significantly more cool.
Still, it's a pretty neat thing all by itself and does provide interesting pictures to look at (Like kittens, I love pretty fluffy kittens, and Google gives me loads). _________________ Tarakana NET |

True, you can't provide your own image file in Google. However, I doubt whether the image search from the lab is entirely keywords based. Fair enough, if you type in a word, you will get a range of relevant images (more relevant than the current image search does). However, if you click on the 'similar images' link below one of the thumbnails you will get a page of results that are really a lot more similar to the chosen thumbnail than the initial results.
So my guess is that Google is developing a more accurate replacement for their current image search which now goes by the lab-name of 'Similar images', but really is a bundle of interesting features that should enhance image searching. _________________ If you can read this, my post is on an alternating background. |

That would be interesting if they take this concept and merge it with their existing image search service... sometimes I have a hard time finding images for things that I don't know what to call. The image search right now only works on things that I know the exact name of. _________________ Come visit Shattered Abstracts! (Photoblog!) |

| Thankyou very much for this. Usually I wouldn't use any websites like this. But I will definiately find this one very useful. I can think of all kinds of situations where it will come in handy. |
