Recently I've noticed a huge slowdown in internet speed. I use Internet Explorer, and I never have this much slowdown. Pages load extra slow and sometimes not even at all. I've run a virus scan and it didn't help. Also I've been getting popups more than normal (sometimes even just from visiting Wikipedia which usually has none). So I'm thinking popups or spyware are part of the problem. I don't have many programs running at once, so that's not the reason for the slowdown.

What's a good free popup and/or spyware blocker, and a good site where I can download it? Is there anything else I can do?

Do you have a wireless network? Some neighbors may be using it and slowing you down. If you do you can go to your router http://192.168.1.1 and you will be able check who is connected and kick them off.

As for a pop-up blocker, go http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ then https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

I haven't seen a pop-up in years.

No I don't have wireless. Sadly enough, I'm still on dial up. I've been meaning to change to something else, but I haven't done it yet. It's not usually this slow. It seems to be only a few sites: Wikipedia and Facebook as the ones that continue to load slow (if they even load at all). At times they just sit and do nothing.

Isolation test. Try a different computer if feasible with the dial up connection and/or try a live Linux CD for starters.

Have you tried clearing your cache? You should, sometimes when your cache space is all used up, it can seriously slow things down.

Personally, I haven't needed any popup and spyware cleaners for years, since I use firefox for most of my online activities, but a few good programs I can think of (and have used myself) are: AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and HijackThis. Mind, I don't know how they're doing these days, but they worked great at the time when IE6 still ruled the web.

I believe it was SpySweeper that I found worked very well but I believe it is only trial software for free

I have AVG installed for some years already and I never had to worry about virus and spyware.

Yes when I first had AVG installed I was still on dial-up.

I also noticed that sites load significantly faster on Firefox than Internet Explorer when I was on dial-up.

The days where I have to worry about virus/spyware and popups are long gone when I switched to Firefox plus AVG.

Not every router use 192.168.1.1.

And I don't think you can add a Firefox add-on to Internet Explorer...

Try rebooting your rooter, that often helps.

You most definitely have a spyware issue. Popups on Wikipedia? That's impossible!

I have found Malwarebyte's Anti-malware very effective (and so have others). You should really run a scan.

Then why are you referring routers earlier on...

Was just adding on to what Scott has said, wasn't really answering Rob1981's question.
