On July 9, Pope Benedict XVI restored the old Traditional Latin Mass, also known as the Tridentine Rite, to the Catholic faithful. In the decree Summorum Pontificum cura issued on his own initiative, the Pope acknowledged that the old Mass was never abolished and that there are in fact two forms of Holy Mass in the Roman Rite, the 'ordinary' form represented by the Missal of Pope Paul VI (2002 edition, also known as the Novus Ordo) and the 'extraordinary' form represented by the Missal of Pius V (1962 edition, also known as the Missal of Blessed Pope John XXIII, the Tridentine Rite, and the Traditional Latin Mass).

For almost forty years, the various heretical factions within the Church, masquerading as what has become known as the "spirit of Vatican II," have been using the liturgy as a means through which they are transforming, or attempting to transform, the Catholic Church from the One, True, Catholic and Apostolic Church, established by Christ Himself, outside of which there is no salvation into a pluralistic, heterogeneous, polymorphous entity in which truth is relative, sin does not exist in any real sense and that all religions and belief systems are valid and deserve equal respect, as long as it embraces the basic principles of the Modernist heresies.

Under the banner of the "spirit of Vatican II" the new liturgy promulgated by Pope Paul VI beginning in 1969 was translated into various vernacular languages by the forces of the Modernist heresy, most notably in the ICEL for the English language translations, and through the liturgy change the beliefs of Catholics around the world. The results were immediate and dramatic. In those places that mistranslated the liturgy, especially the Mass, belief in Catholic doctrine dropped like a rock among the faithful and Mass attendance also. Churches emptied, vocations to the priesthood and religious life dwindles and many churches closed and many Catholics stopped believing in the essentials of the basic truths of Christianity. These became known, quite disparagingly, as the "fruits of Vatican II."

Against this onslaught of Modernist 'reform' were a hardly band of Traditionalists who refused to give up the pre-Vatican II liturgy and the pre-Vatican II understanding of the True Religion. While the Modernists insisted that Christians must live in and of the world, Traditionalists headed Christ's words when he said that we, as Christians, are to live in the world, but not of it. The old liturgy, especially the old Mass, the Tridentine Mass, became a banner around which they rallied to safeguard the faith.

Modernist priests and bishops refused those faithful who wanted to retain the old liturgy and the old beliefs. Many of the faithful did not even realise that what their priests were telling them was a lie in the name of the Council called the "spirit of Vatican II." This 'spirit' repudiated the teachings of the Church, and the very words of the Council itself, to be replaced by empty liturgy, Masses that are probably invalid (meaning that consecrations do not take place), and heretical sermons. I don't know how many Masses I sat through where the priest preached that Hell was't for eternity after all, or how all Christianity is not really superior to any other religion and that the Catholic Church just one expression church among other equally valid expressions. I can't count the number of times priests just 'winged' the prayers of the Mass or didn't use bread from wheat flour only and water or used some sort of juice rather than wine from grapes only.

Slowly but surely, Traditionalists began to appear in opposition to this onslaught of heresy and slowly societies faithful to the true Catholic Faith began to appear which offered the old Mass, free of the heretical vernacular translations of the Novus Ordo. The Traditionalists became the fastest growing part of the Catholic Church and have continually demonstrated that they are, and always have been, faithful to the Magesterium of the Church, unlike the heretics in the Novus Ordo who wish to change the Magesterium and call it Catholicism.

For years, the Pope and top officials in the Vatican have been worrying about the disintegration of the Catholic Faith brought about since the Council. They have watched the faith become renewed as Traditionalists become a larger and stronger force. Societies such as the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, founded with the help and encouragement of then Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, and created as a society of Apostolic Right by Pope John Paul II, of blessed memory, have been running hugely successful apostlates all over the world, including houses of formation and two seminaries (one in Germany another in the US). Other institutes also exist too including convents and monasteries all attached to the pre-Vatican II liturgy.

And so we come to the decree Summorum Pontificum cura promulgated this last Monday. The Pope wishes to build upon this great success that the old liturgy has had in filling the Churches once again and somehow hopes that it will rub off onto the Novus Ordo. The Pope has already ordered a complete re-translation into the vernacular of the Novus Ordo in several languages, including German and English to replace the less than accurate translations in use today, including the blatantly false translation of the Words of Consecration which many experts believe invalidates the Novus Ordo in those languages. Rumours abound that soon the pope will encourage that the Mass be said "ad Orientam," that is to say with the priest and the people all facing the East as in the Traditional Mass, replacing the innovation of the Novus Ordo with the priest facing "versus Populo" or opposite the people.

Maybe some of attitude of sacredness of the Tridentine Rite will rub off onto the Novus Ordo as more and more people begin to experience the grandeur, grace and holiness of the old rite and demand more of it from the new.

The Novus Ordo Mass is a perfectly legitimate one. It is simply often abused and misunderstood.

For example, it is my understanding that the priest is intended to conduct only the readings and homily in the vernacular and the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the rest of the Mass in the original Latin and Greek. I, personally, have NEVER seen this done. If it WAS done, then there wouldn't be a problem at all. The Novus Ordo is SUPPOSED to be Ad Orientum anyway. Although, again, I have never personally seen this done.

The Novus Ordo could be as aesthetically wonderful as the traditional Latin Mass if it weren't for the many abuses that have leaked in. In and of itself, it is a totally legitimate thing, though.

Agreed, if it is done entirely in Latin. The various translations are a problem, including English and German where the words of the consecration itself (themselves?) have been mistranslated. The Vatican has said (back in the 1970's) that isn't a problem, but many experts aren't so sure. I personally am not so sure either, since the opinions of a Vatican sacred congregation are not infallible.

Not really, although it is possible. It was designed to be versus Populo but can be said ad Orientem in a pinch. I've read accounts of it done that way and the verdict is that they much prefer it. It was recently revealed that the Pope celebrates his private Mass in the chapel of the Apostolic Palace ad Orientem. This came about when it was first reported, after the release of the Motu Proprio, that the Pope celebrates the Tridentine Rite in his private Mass and released pictures to prove it. This report was hastily denied by the Vatican saying that those pictures showed him celebrating the Novus Ordo ad Orientem.

According to the Vatican II decree Sacrosanctam Concillium, the language of the Mass was supposed to have remained in Latin with those parts that changed from Mass to Mass in the vernacular. These would be the Introit, Opening Prayer, the Readings and Responsory, Homily, Prayer of the Faithful, Prayer Over the Gifts, and the Communion and Post-communion prayers. The various Bishops conferences overruled the Council while the Pope and Vatican looked the other way. I guess the Vatican just wanted to see what happened, and now we know the results.

The Pope has begun reassert Papal authority over the liturgy (in fact Summorum Ponfiticum begins by stating it) and has ordered new translations of the Novus Ordo to correct the numerous errors (including the Words of Consecration). With the freeing of the Tridentine Mass it has been speculated that the Pope hopes to inspire some much needed reverence in the faithful and to cross polllinate the two forms of Mass.

Ironically, one of the reasons why the Mass was codified in 1570 to give us the Tridentine Rite was basically the same reason the Pope is taking control of the Liturgy now. There was wide variation in the celebration of the Mass and those clergy who were sympathetic to the Protestant heresy were inserting less than orthodox material into the liturgy. Today it's the same, this time the heresy is Modernism, Universalism and (in the US) Americanism. From now on, all vernacular translations of the Mass are to approved by the Vatican itself rather than the local Bishops conferences and all of the extraneous material not in the typical Latin edition removed.

Personally, I can't help thinking that sometime down the road, if the Pope lives long enough, there will be a new edition of both the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine Mass with Benedict's name on it.

That remains to be seen I've seen very nice Novus Ordo Masses, but not for quite a few years, perhaps more than a decade. I gave up on the Novus Ordo a number of years ago and now attend the Tridentine Mass exclusively at the local FSSP apostlate.
