i am a new ubuntu user, wonder if anybody experience here can help me out. ubuntu comes default with a gnome interface, and recently, the gnome desktop hangs on me. i can still operate some of the commands using short cut keys but i hate the unstable gnome platform. i understand there are other desktops available like kde / fluxbox etc, but i am not so sure which one provides the most stable desktops. I hope you guys can give some recommendations here, and enlighten I can I go about installing one. Thanks in advance.

Gnome was acting a bit unresponsive (e.g. 0.x second delays on simple GUI actions) so I gave XFCE a try and been loving it, got Emerald and Compiz back up on it and working great. The only thing that I missed from Gnome was automatic multimedia keys, I had to manually set up the play/previous/next buttons.

To install XFCE and associated programs and settings for Ubuntu:

run command:
sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
(100MB+ download if I recall correctly)

logout

in login screen, choose options/session and select XFCE

enjoy

You are right, I can feel the lag, that 0.x second of delays can be frustrating, really am not sure if I need to do anything to activate the ATI display card or to install a new desktop environment like what you have recommended. Perhaps, I should really give a try.

hi krt, I've installed xubuntu desktop, but after restarting computer, and login to XFCE session, I can only see a blank screen - blue in color. I can't do anything but to restart computer and boot it back to GNOME again. Wonder if I miss any steps ?

I wouldn't try Fluxbuntu, I remember trying it and liking it but its not worth it, but that was my computer which was more than capable. That said, your computer is also a very capable system. Shame about the blank screen on Xubuntu...

I looked at the page I used when working out how to do it ( http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/xubuntu ) and that was exactly what I had so I'm not sure what is going on.

Maybe try:
http://www.google.com/search?q.....fter+login
(I didn't look into the results as there were too many and I'm a bit busy now)

And you may be on to something about the graphics card. It seems Gnome was trying to use the CPU for rendering instead of the graphics card. Or it could still be doing that on XFCE and I just don't notice it being it is more lightweight. All diagnostics that I knew about suggested that direct rendering and the graphics card were enabled and "in use" verified by an NVidia logo on start up and the fact that I can get TwinView up.

Sorry i never noticed that problem but your system should be able to run gnome fine but you could try kde although it is much different then gnome, your system should handle it fine. try ubuntuforums, you are more likely to get a fix for gnome there

If you are adding a compositing engine such as Compiz, the choice of window manager (xfwm, kwin or metacity for XFCE, KDE and Gnome respectively) does not make much difference. The only reason I tried XFCE and found it to be a significant improvement was not because XFCE was faster, but instead it was something about Gnome making it go much slower than it should be.

You should look into other people's experienceo n the Ubuntu forums for your video card. That's most likely your problem.

The "Restricted Hardware Driver Manager" should helped him to get the way out, and X300 is common on many laptop and not a new chips......This may be the problem of the Gnome and other desktop package like compiz - compiz will make the desktop environment less stable.

But the problem my due to the trackerd that is eating too much resources and make Gnome failed to respond - try to stop this process and see is your system perform better.
