The following is something I had in a notepad document but never posted it yet....until now. Since hooking tv up as 2nd monitor, I have had maybe 5 crashes total (no bsod, just game crash). I am interested in why that made a difference. I might be slow in responding, sorry in advance.
CPU === Q9650 3.0ghz (7.5x400) 40c/idle (aftermarket cpu cooler)
Motherboard === Asus P5E3 Premium Wifi-AP@N
RAM === OCZ3P16004GK Platinum 2x2gb ddr3 1600 7-7-7-24 1.9v (black slots)
PSU === Corsair 750watts, single 12v rail @60amps
GFX === ATI Radeon MSI HD4850 38c/idle
OS === Vista Ultimate sp1
Problem:
During intensive graphics there will be one of the following errors: BSOD, Infinite Loop or a Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered.
Programs effected:
Final Fantasy 11 (FFXI), Command n Conquer Kanes Wrath, FarCry2, Photoshop7.0 (sometimes) and visualizations in WinAmp. Crysis runs fine on Very High settings along with any other games/programs I use. I have tried WoW and it ran fine with max settings. FFXI will run fine it I do not pump up the gfx options and leave them on default.
History:
This was a new build with parts ordered from NewEgg around 1-1-09. OS at build was WinXp Pro SP2. Upon first boot, mobo BIOS was upgraded to 6505 to recognize cpu correctly and all drivers were installed/updated for all hardware. RAM freq/timings/volts were manually set per OCZ's recommendation. Newest version of CCC was also installed. Computer ran fine unless games were played and in XP the vpu error always reset itself with no BSOD. Difer CCC versions have been tried, with a proper full uninstall of previous CCC and cleaning in safemode.
From here I tried reinstalling OS and then drivers, no luck. Then played with various BIOS settings and even downgraded BIOS to 5505, no luck. Have set all BIOS settings manually and also have tried AUTO settings.
Have replaced original PSU (Rosewill 850w 4x12v rail combined 64amp) with the PSU listed in specs. The new PSU made no noticable difference at all.
Temp swapped video card with a 9800 GTX, problem still existed. My card ran fine in their machine playing the same games I play that crash.
Memtest86, both sticks installed returned no errors on multiple passes. Then moved on to testing each stick by itself. 1 stick returned no errors at all after 8 passes, other stick returned an error on first pass on test #1. I rebooted and ran test again, first pass on test #6 has an error. I then let it run for 8 passes with no further errors. From what I have read, a random error is common in non ecc ram, but others say it is still a bad thing to happen.
Have ran Prime with no errors, forget how long I let it run but it was for awhile.
In system events I get a an error with atikmdag, the time matches up with when I get my "problem" mentioned above. The error description is "EDID contain an error in the descriptor field". So I went into CCC and deselected its EDID option and entered known values. Have also tried various other options in CCC, like disable AI, fan speeds and so on.
This is a tad out of the timeline but somewhere along the line I upgraded to Vista Ultimate in hopes DX10 would give me some love...no luck. With Vista, CCC no longer catches and resets my driver (the option for vpu recovery is gone) so its left to Vista to do it and it has only caught it maybe 3-4 times total...resulting in a BSOD about 95% of the time. Upon BSOD it is not the CPU crashing, it does create crash logs but it doesn't show the application I was using at the time..thats normal as far as I know.
Anyone have some ideas/help here, I spend about 7+ hours a day working on this. I have read thousands of posts from about numerous sites, benchmarked, stressed and done everything I can think of. Have collaborated with someone I know very good with hardware and even he is stumped. This computer has been tore down and put back together numerous times for differ reasons/ideas. Any help here will be very appreciated. The computer runs strong minus this problem.
*Update*
I gave up on the problem for a few and one day decided to hook my TV up as a 2nd monitor. The blue screens have stopped but games will still crash randomly. I also found out that if I OC my video card at all, it greatly increases the crashes. Why hooking up the TV made a difference...I have no clue. I was hoping someone could explain all this to me. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |

Have you ever tried changing your GPU driver?
Reinstalling the same version may not help, sometimes you got to try different versions or even different drivers. _________________

I don't recall trying that, what benefits would it have.

Last I checked, they only had "live update" which would say I had the latest updates. _________________ God doesn't exist but I do |
