These awards are garbage,

Bioshock is a great game but it is definatley not game of the year. Its has fun campaign the first time you play it, but no replay value and nothing to do after that (e.g. multiplayer or online).

Halo 3 does not deserve any award, unless it is for the most over rated game award. The only thing good about it, is the theater, forge and the storyline was alright.

Most video game awards are pretty stupid, and just biast. I remember reading that Spike TV's awards are fixed (based on how much money they got from the game maker or a certain company). I wouldn't be surprised if most awards were rigged in a similar manner. Overall: awards aren't a big deal. It's all a matter of opinion of what the "top game" of the month, year (or whatever) is.

The same thing applies to internet and magazine reviews. I hate how people obsess over games that got high ratings, and assume they are the best and only games to buy. If people would rent games more, they would actually have their own views on things. Instead they are just sheep that follow what reviewers have to say. Not everyone is like this, but it seems like a good percent of "casual" gamers are. Games like Grand Theft Auto and Halo simply aren't the best, but do well in sales due to attention in the news and hype and so on.

Also, I forgot to point out that the award for the best studio (Harmonix) is a complete joke. All Harmonix made was Rock Band but there is a shocking coincidence that Rock Band was published by MTV and SpikeTV is owned by MTV. From a developers points of view, a game like Rock Band would be extremely easy to make, and it is hardly original, which is all Harmonix made this year.

A lot of these Game Award contests are fake. You should search for magazines/websites/etc... that give awards based on votes by the regular gamer.

Still, it's hard to agree 100% with any game of the year award. While you think that Bioshock has absolutely no replay value, someone else keeps playing it trying a different style, using different upgrades etc... The same with Halo 3: you might think it's the most over-rated game this year while someone else will tell you it's the best game ever made.

I don't really care about those Game of the Year awards. It's all way to much based on taste. I'll make up my own mind about the game of the year and I don't really care if anyone else agrees with that Wink

Some of those awards are alright. Portal is some pretty breakthroughing technology (but, if I'm not mistaken, didn't the Portal Gun exist in Half-Life 2, or something, making Portal itself just re-used technology?). OK, bad example. Or is it the perfect example proving that these awards are just a load of bull, and although some of these games may be very fun, they are not necessarily the ones that should have won these awards.

Moral of the thread: video game awards, especially those on TV, are a joke. End of story.

Well, at least the one on SpikeTV did one thing right by recognizing Crysis as having the best graphics.

I always enjoy the feeling I get when I enjoy a game that was rated poorly.

I've found reviews in certain magazines to be fairly useful. I read Maximum PC a lot and generally agree with their ratings of games. Of course, I always make sure to try out a game demo (if there's one available) before buying a game. Demos led me to Freelancer and Call of Duty, both games I played and liked a lot.

No, the portal gun wasn't seen in Half-Life before portal came out Smile I'm not sure but I think there's a mod available now where you can use the portal gun in Half-Life 2 and there are rumors that the portal gun will be used in Half-Life 2 Episode 3. But the first time the gun was used was in portal Smile .

Really? Then they must have been advertising the Portal Gun since before Half-Life 2 came out, because I'm almost positive that I saw a trailer for Half-Life 2 that had the Portal Gun in it...

That would have been the trailer for The Orange Box.

As for TV Video Game Awards, I was just watching X-Play's 2007 awards yesterday. It wasn't all that bad. They were quick, on topic, and had plenty of humour too (Weighted Companion Cube as nominee for best new video game character).

It was enjoyable, unlike other shows ... *cough*Spike*cough*.

But indeed, I don't agree with Bioshock winning Game of the Year. In fact, I enjoyed Call of Duty 4 a whole of a lot better than Bioshock. And not only that, but I would replay Call of Duty 4 dozens of times before I think of starting Bioshock again. And the multiplayer? Replay value heaven. Must have game, game of the year imo.
