Do you think that violence on TV is responsible for the high number of Violent crimes in the United States?

As a proud owner of many violent TV shows, Movies, and Games, I do not believe that TV is responsible for the high amount of Violence in the United States. I am definitely not a violent person, event though I have been exposed to violence on TV all of my life. I contribute part of the problem to bad parenting. While I am not a parent myself, I was shown as a child what was right and wrong, and therefor, I believe, wrongful acts are not even contemplated. While I do not contribute the problem totally to bad parenting, it is a factor in todays world. I also believe that the educational system is failing. Alot of people in todays world are just plain stupid! They lack a sense of basic reasoning skills, And once again, I do not think that this is the only problem. I do not fully understand the problem myself, but I do know that the effect TV has on violence crimes is not as big as it is made out to be.

I don't think that violence on television can be blamed as the sole reasoning behind why a child turns to violence over the years as they enter into young adulthood or even into becoming an adult. Yes, it is true that when a child is exposed to violent video games and violence in the media on television that there is a possibility that they become desensitized to what is taking place in front of them. Seeing people get killed in a movie without any consequence on the screen or even in a video game might have some kind of effect on a child, but if there is proper parenting stepping in I think it is possible for the children not to believe that just because they see something violent on their television screens that it means that it is acceptable for real life. I think it is in part a responsibility of the parents to step in and explain to a child that while something may be portrayed in a certain light on the television or in their other outlets for entertainment that it is simply something that does not work that way in the real world. If I child is offered up a sense of what is right and wrong and learns that there are consequences to certain actions, then I think it is possible for them to understand that violence in the media is not necessarily the way of life.

I know that there have been extensive studies on the subject and depending on which researcher is working towards what theory will depend on what the so called experts have to say. In my own personal opinion I feel if a parent uses discretion and tries to keep things age appropriate through the years for a child, then there will be a less likely air of confusion for the child when they encounter such violent media. I certainly would not let a four year old play an overly violent, lots of bloodshed video game, not necessarily because of the theme of the game, but because the content is something that a four year old would not need to understand or be exposed to. I realize that some parents might differ on that opinion, but as long as guidelines are set and parents play an active role in keeping an eye on what their children are involved with and are able to to explain the differences between reality and the world of fantasy in the entertainment and gaming world, then things should turn out alright for the child. If a child has no guidance of no support system other than peers the feel this type of material is a way of life, then perhaps they will take to violence, but I am not really sure. As it stands I think a lot of various factors come into play with a child's predisposition to violence that goes beyond exposure to media.
