Ashton took a very very long time to get back to match fitness from his injuries. But the last three games West ham have seen what Ashton is all about again. Whatever the reasons for him taking months to get match fit again (personally think his ankle and confidence wasn't right) He is back.
With Freddie Sears fit again and hopefully on the bench for the rest of the season, the rest of the season looks good. |

West Ham United's conveyor belt has been oiled up and is churning out Englands future stars once again.
In recent weeks we have seen 19 year old Freddie Sears get his chance in West Ham's first team from the Youth/reserve team. Scoring within six minutes of making his debut!
Also a young James Tomkins getting a little run in the first team because of an injury to Matthew Upson. He isn't quite up to it yet in my opinion, not far off though.
Also places in the first team squad this season for the likes off Jack Collison, Kyel Reid this season.
You only have to look at the team match days too see Anton Ferdinand and Mark Noble who are past graduates from the West Ham youth set up.
A quick look around the premiership will show up a vast array of players from West Ham's youth set up, due to Financial difficulties had to be sold over the years.
Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe (Debatable!) Glenn Johnson
Probably more that should be there but I can't think this early in the morning! |

So, yesterday West Ham United lost at Old Toilet to Manchester United by four goals to one. And for the mostpart, Manchester United were down to ten men, after the sending off of Nani.
However, Dean Ashton was among the goals, with a rather spectacular overhead kick, though if I am not mistaken, he was later taken off due to an injury. Anyone clarify this?
The result leaves Manchester United with one hand on The Premiership trophy, and any slip from CSKA Fulham means a title party! _________________ It feels so empty without a signature, so here is some mindless gabble to occupy the space |

| Quote: | Crew-West Ham United friendly marred by brawl between fans
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A halftime brawl between more than 100 fans marred an exhibition match Sunday between West Ham United of the English Premier League club and the MLS' Columbus Crew.
The fights, which overshadowed West Ham United's 3-1 win, began when a handful of West Ham supporters, some wearing the team's claret and blue colors, entered the northeast corner of the stadium where the Crew's most boisterous supporters typically gather.
Crew supporters began directing chants toward the rival fans, and fights quickly broke out between more than 100 Crew fans and at least 30 West Ham fans. Columbus police officers and Crew Stadium security staff eventually separated the groups.
Highway Patrol officers arrested one fan outside the stadium for disorderly conduct, Patrol spokeswoman Anne Ralston said. A dispatcher didn't know whether Columbus police had made any arrests inside the stadium.
This is the second incident Crew fans have been involved in this season. As New England celebrated its winning goal at Columbus on May 24, a fan shouted a racial slur at Revolution forward Kheli Dube, who scored in the 89th minute. Dube is black. The incident prompted a league investigation, with MLS commissioner Don Garber saying that the fan will be banned from league games for life if officials were able to identify him from a video that captured it.
West Ham forward Dean Ashton scored the game's first goal, a blistering low shot that flew past Andy Gruenebaum in the sixth minute.
Forward Jason Garey put Columbus on the scoreboard in the 20th minute, leaping to head home a bending crossing pass from Cory Elenio.
Crew midfielder Brad Evans inadvertently doubled West Ham's advantage by scoring into his own goal in the 26th minute. Kyle Reid completed the scoring for West Ham with a close-range goal in the 53rd minute.
"It was a terrific game for us. We needed that sort of a workout," West Ham manager Alan Curbishley said. "We took the MLS game because we wanted to come to America. We wanted to show people what we're about." |
Large scale sports brawls just don't tend to happen in the United States. Usually, there's only a handful of people involved, not an entire section. So this was definitely out of the norm and shocked many people.
To be honest, Americans laugh at the term "American Hooligan" because there just isn't one. There may be the "idiot drunk out of his mind," but never a true agitator. |

We were discussing this on another site you know about, and came to the conclusion that it might have something to do with the release of the film about The ICF (Inter City Firm) who were notorious hooligans in the 1970's and 1980's when hooliganism was rife in English football.
Not a great advert for English football for it to happen in America, rest assured it is all but gone from our stadia here, and I would guess at it being a one-off. _________________ It feels so empty without a signature, so here is some mindless gabble to occupy the space |

By all accounts (and I wasn't there, so this is all hearsay info)
The Coloubus fans started it by goading the West Ham fans. And from I have read on West Ham sites, it was blown up out off all proportion in the papers here and stateside.
This site http://www.kumb.com has video clips up from YouTube

The folks at BigSoccer, a very popular American forum, came to exact same conclusion. Only, we're goading out own country men, saying they're were just trying to mimic it.

Here's what I think was the generally acknowledged timeline:
- West Ham supporters enter the Columbus supporters' section (in America, they offered "segregated" seating in which you can be on the loud side or quiet side. Supporters congregate on the loudside, moms dads and children typically on the quiet side). In the US, it's a whole different experience to stand in the loud side. So I don't think anyone believes there to be any ill will about it, they just wanted the experience.
- Now, I don't know if this is uniquely American, but when an opposing team's fan flaunts their team colors in the supporters' section, it usually ends ugly for the opposing team's fan. But usually it becomes nothing more than the typical a-hole chant (the entire stadium practically stands up, starts pointing as said person and chants "a-hole." It's pretty fun actually).
- West Ham supporters took offense to that, words were exchanged, then a punch was thrown.
Was it ever two sides looking for fights? No, not at all. Was it more like two sides that had a little too much to drink got too easily offended by standard stadium fare? Yes, absolutely.
It was a nice drunken brawl. Happens anywhere. |
