I don't know how many games were made into moives but the first games come to mind are Silent Hill Resident Evil, Wing Commander, AvP and they're making a Halo movie, I'm not sure but i think Quake is coming too.
Have you heard about "StarShip Troopers"movie?, i've seen it and its kinda StarCraft, however. Anyone I know who played the game and watched the movies all call it "StarCraft Troopers." Close enough for gov't work, anyways. Final Fantasy line of games are renowned for having good story lines and character development. They did create a Final Fantasy movie already, but I think they could do a lot better. and the list goes on..... what do you think? |

The only movie that I liked, that you mentioned was Resident Evil, those movies have been pretty decent. I didn't really like Silent Hill or Alien Vs Predator, and I haven't seen the others. I am pretty sure that they have scrapped the Halo movie because the budget was too high... and some other problems. I think they are also planning a Gears of War film, hopefully it doesn't end up like Halo but I would imagine Gears of War would probably have a lower budget than Halo (to create the film, since the stuff isn't that advanced and wouldn't require as much special effects).
Also, heres a nice little list:

The Starship Troopers movie is a year older than Starcraft, which, along with Warcraft, is obviously derived from the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K tabletop games. It's perfectly valid to complain about the Starship Troopers movie, but not because of the vague similarities to Starcraft - it can be criticized for having only extremely vague similarities to the Heinlein book, which was written in the 60s, and for having a central message that is actually the opposite of the book's while keeping the title.
Most movies based on licenses suck. Sometimes they're good. I can't think of a good video game movie off the top of my head, but they're certainly possible. _________________ [img:d156d322f3]http://seriousbusiness.l2p.net/img/seriousbanner.gif[/img:d156d322f3]

Of the game-movies I've seen I like Resident Evil (only seen the first one), Final Fantasy (really like both movies) and only the first Starship Troopers movie, because the second movie was really awful. I don't agree with your "Starcraft Troopers" though, as Duck said, Starship Troopers was there before Starcraft.
I'm looking forward to the Warcraft movie, which is going to be a war-movie, so they could make it awesome . There are other movies that could be awesome if they don't mess it up, like Max Payne, Halo and others. _________________ .// Proud to be Lifeless for more then 4 years \\. |

The only video-game based movie that I really like is Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. A lot of people didn't like it--I know a lot of people who complained because the setting was different than any Final Fantasy they had ever played--but I felt that it was a good movie for what it was, a movie, and not a movie about a video-game.
There is a video-game based movie coming out in November based on the Hitman games. It has some potential to be good, but I'm not too confident anymore because of who they've chosen to play 47. I think Jason Statham would have been the most ideal choice, instead they chose this random guy, Timothy Olyphant. I've only seen a few movies that Olyphant has been in, but I don't remember who he is or if he'll be any good. _________________

I doubt many people know who Statham is. I had to look him up: and he appears to only have had a few leading roles. As for Timothy Olyphant: about the same when it comes to roles. Not every movie should be judged on who the lead is. How are new stars going to be made, if only major stars (or people you've heard of) get all the roles?
But anyway... to the topic on hand. The Resident Evil movies have been good, and the third one (coming this year) looks great as well. Other than those, nothing has been that good. The original Mortal Kombat was somewhat decent, but the sequels weren't. Super Mario Brothers was cheesy and lame. Street Fighter was decent, but a bit dull.
A very good video game movie: The Wizard. It's about a kid that is really good at video games, and ends up entering a tournament. It was made in the 1980's and is still my personal favorite video game movie. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

The only movies I've seen based on video games are the Pokemon ones, a live action Mario Bros. one, and Tomb Raider (the video game did come first there, didn't it?).
None were particularly good, although Pokemon is pretty cool =).
I have seen Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, which I thought wasn't bad, but isn't really based on a video game.
I think the flaw is that video games generally have a fairly long plot, and one that is also quite repetitive to allow for similar gameplay throughout, which doesn't make for good movie making. Using the same world as the video game, however, like in Pokemon (and, now that I think of it, Final Fantasy: Advent Children - which was an excellent movie), but creating a plot separate from that of the game should work though, and I think Advent Children shows that it does. On the down side, this requires knowledge of the game, and so the movie is quite limited in audience and the budget will hence be limited. |

If it is done right then i think there should be a lot of games that would make GREAT movies, certain games that actually have a plot are basically interactive movies already so it isn't all that difficult.
I would not mind seeing a metal gear solid series of movies that were mind well (think Bourne series combined with MGS ownage). |

What's really amusing about that is that Blizzard developers readily admits that Starcraft was heavily influenced by both the Starship Troopers book (written in the 1970's) and the awfully adapted (but I still loved the movie) motion picture.
It's been heavily outlined by many StarCraft and Starship Troopers fans where and what the homages to the book and movie are in the game.
You kind of have a backwards impression. |

| The thing I hate is that game companies say that they are going to make a movie about a game and then they just don't. Some time ago I used to read many game magazines and from time to time they wrote that x company was making the movie...and they never did, or if they did it just sucked or was only for USA... |

Agus. you also have this with books that are said to be going to movie. Look at Battlefield Earth. That was only recently released but the book I read over 15 years ago said "soon to be a movie" or something along those lines.
On a similar note to this. I would love to see some RPGs made into movies. Not computer RPGs but the old style paper and pencil face to face kind. One that I think has a great environment for this would be the Rifts Universe.
Edit: There is an option on a Rifts Movie through Bruckheimer and Walt Disney that was extended this year. Would be great to see. |

There are pretty much no video game to movie adaptations that were well done in my opinion. Well, I guess no video game to movie adaptations that are aimed towards adults.
The Pokemon animated movies are pretty awesome for a children's movie, even though I wouldn't really enjoy it these days. |

| i believe it is a dangerous place to play in. usually the games that become movies are the most well know and most played. due to the players expectations wich are very high always, the movie needs to pay attention to the minimal details so it can become a success. |

Well it certainly isn't uncommon for movies and animated films to be made after games these days and although some of them suck badly there are some that shine bright like a ray of hope that shows us that not all is lost.
Starship troopers is one of my favorite movies and I have been watching them since I was a little kid, somewhere around 5-6 years old, and I really loved them even then and even though I was kind of afraid of blood and the huge bugs.
Another great example is FF: Advent Children which although it lacks anything too specific of a storyline was really great, especially the last scene where everyone is giving Cloud a boost.
From my examples you might have gotten the impression that all movies made after games are great, but don't be confused, Silent Hill was one of a heck of a boring experience, i mean they didn't even have the decency to make the stuff look scary!
But all in all, there is hope and I am sure the future will produce many interesting movies made after games. |

| Personally I think the Final Fantasy movies are always good to watch. I just really skimmed through all the posts and did not see the Mortal Kombat movies added. Ya they were not anything great but I loved those movies when i was little. |
