I happen to love debian. I agree with the debian social contract and just love the ease of a debian system. Sometime I like having to do more work to get my system working the way I want and always found I like Slackware for that but on my day to day system I generally don't like having to do a lot of work to maintain it.
So what is your favorite Linux distrobution?

I use Kubuntu because it just works and I don't have time to tinker around with things even if it helps (e.g. I tried Gentoo before, couldn't install things I wanted because of dependencies and didn't have time to figure it out). I'm not a big fan of GNOME so Kubuntu is better than Ubuntu for me.

I don't really have a favourite flavour of Linux. I've used most of the them and until about a year or so ago I switched distros every time I bought new hardware.

I find them all pretty much the same and where there are differences it is mostly in the underlying update mechanism and package management. Some distros include non-free software as add-ons for money but I tend to avoid those preferring totally free versions.

Right now I am a Fedora user and intend to remain a Fedora user for the foreseeable future. There is no particular reason why I am sticking with Fedora except for the simple reason that it happens to be the distribution I was using when I decided that it was time to stick with a single distro. I may change my mind in the future and switch to another distro or even go back to continual change but that is for the future to decide.

There are distros that I will not use and those are the Debian based distros. However, there is no technical reason why that is but, rather, moral and political. I object and oppose the Debian Social Contract which I consider to be democratic and egalitarian which are moral evils. Therefore, Debian and all distros derived from them are out.

I have heard you say this a lot and would care to hear why you feel that people shouldn't be considered equal?

I did a Mandriva 2009.0 xfce edition install tonight and everything works. It is the first time that has ever happened for me except for a customized operating system for specific hardware. It was just amazing but it somewhat takes the fun out of it.

I don't really care, however, I do really like the Debian package system, so I usually use Debian- or Ubuntu-based distributions.

Well, at the moment I'm still not sure what I'll continue using, Debian or OpenSuSE. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. OpenSuSE has way better hardware support than Debian offers. But then again on Debian it's easier to install things. And so on, I'll just use SuSE for a while now and see how it ends up.

I don't really have a favourite distro, I just test some new releases and keep using the ones I like until the next one comes a long Smile

I've tried quite a lot of distros, but the ones I like the most are Fedora and Mandriva. Mandriva was the first distro that worked out of the box for me and Fedora 10 works perfectly too and since that's the latest distro I downloaded I'm using Fedora at the moment. I might stick with Fedora or maybe change when Mandriva 2009 is released.

I also used Ubuntu for a couple of weeks but I do prefer Fedora and Mandriva over Ubuntu.

Mandriva 2009 has been released and Mandriva 2009.1 is in Alpha 2.

Anyone try any of these distros in any recent releases. I am debating about trying one of them out or sticking with more of a major distro. Here's the distros: Frugalware, Pardus, and Wolvix.

They should not pretend things that they are not. Everybody is different, that is to say unique, which means, by definition, they cannot be equal. Treating everybody as equals is an insult to each individual's uniqueness.

I haven't but go for it and give us a report. One of the strengths of Free Software, and Linux in particular, is that anybody can put together their own package to suit their own particular needs. Nobody has to be forced into a 'one-size-fits-all' box mentality that has contributed so much to the mediocritization of Western society. The 'equality' mentality does exactly the same thing.

I meant Mandriva 2009.1 because the latest version I tried was the 2009 Smile

I read some reviews about Wolvix and decided to give that a try. Reminds me a lot of Zenwalk which I'm actually shocked I haven't used in awhile.

linuxdoctor - I'm not ignoring your response, I just don't want to make the thread go off topic because I see that happening quickly if I do.

Wolvix is designed to be a livedistro (I missed this) It looks very nice, supported my broadcom wireless chip out of the box and ran as well as it could off a cd. I didn't actually try installing it but it does have a feature to install somewhat hidden in the control panel but its in development

I object to and oppose people that object and oppose the Debian Social Contract therefore my use of Ubuntu is purely to spite linuxdoctor. Wink

I'm more of a FreeBSD user really (just look at Asgard running FreeBSD), but I've been known to run Debian based systems for portables. Just give me Fluxbox and FreeBSD 7.1 over Fedora bloatware any day. Twisted Evil
