I would prefer something I can just use in my browser, but I will go with a download if nothing decent is out there.

My (limited) recommendations:

Chatzilla (Firefox extension)
Pidgin (Integrates IM and IRC nicely especially with a plugin or two)

I'd only go with either of them if you already use Firefox or Pidgin respectively.

I would suggest mIRC or X-Chat 2. Though they aren't browser-based, you're not going to beat them with anything you can find that is browser-based. If you really want something like that look at Chatzilla above or the IRC feature of Opera.

I recommend pidgin so VERY much.

But if you get Opera (which is free) it comes with a free built in irc client, along with an email client, and a bunch of other cool things.
