I intend to set up a forum, but not quite sure which one is good. Appreciate some recommendations and the reason why you recommend a particular forum systems. I have listed some of them here, of course the list is not exhaustive.

- PhpBB2
- PhpBB Olympus
- Simple Machines
- vBulletin
- yaBB
- punBB
- IPB

i use phpbb2 and always have. Its free, there's lots of templates available and theres lots of modifications

I wouldn't go with phpbb3 (PhpBB Olympus) yet as its only in RC7 but the choice is up to you

I've been a fan of Simple Machines. I have heard that it is difficult to design your own themes for it though as the templating system is a little complex, but them I imagine designing a skin for any forum system would be difficult.

There are a lot of nice themes for SMF already, and of course an abundance of plug ins. Of course, everything is free Wink

I can tell you that you will want to stay away from YaBB because of security and performance issues (unless they have fixed it in a recent release), and IPB goes for $150 per license.

Phpbb is in my opinion still the best forum system with the most features and easily extendible. (And I think many people share that opinion since is the most widely used forum system. )

If I was myself, I would choose phpbb as well. There are countless mods that you are able to install to customize it to your heart's delight. And best of all, it's Free! Can't go wrong with free when there is tons of support for it. If installing phpbb through fantastico, updates to the board are virtually pain-free Wink

If you are a brave person and are not afraid of doing software updates often, you can try installing the Olympus version. There is no support for it, so you should know a little bit to coding to venture into it.

I have used IPB as a user but not as an administrator. Plus, you need to pay money to use it. I think that it does have a lot of the mods/options already installed so you dont have to worry too much about that.

As for the others, I have not had the opportunity to try them as of yet.

i used IPB as an administrator back when it was free and i found i couldn't get on with it, i didn't like the admin side of it as i couldn't work out where everything was.

When we were looking at forum software for my Scout Site we looked at vBulletin but the price of it was way to high for us, so we stuck with phpbb2

i've heard that Simple Machines is good to use, really simple.

I've been a member on IPB, vBulletin and phpbb2 and vBulletin looks to be the best between them if you can afford the price of it, if not then IPB or phpbb2/phpbb3 i would suggest

Maybe it was intentional. You never know, patman3d could have multiple personality disorder (which I think is a load of bull, but that's another topic).

I'd go with phpBB, either 2 or Olympus. If Olympus doesn't have a stable version, then maybe go with 2. Olympus is pretty cool though.

I vote for phpBB.

I have been in LLP forum for years and it seems there is no trouble at all, if there is any chance for me to install a new forum on my site, phpBB is the choice. Discuz! is the one I am using, it is nice and powerful, but it requires much more than phpBB to install. That would be a big problem, if you are going to install a forum on a server that contains a lot of limits.

Come on everyone, don't spoil phpBB's name! Spell it as phpBB instead of PhpBB! Wink

I would choose phpBB.

People say that phpBB does not have many features to boast about, and getting IPB or vBulletin will be better. For this, I beg to differ.

phpBB MODs are free, and support is provided too. By installing the MODs that you need, you not only can remove all the clutter, and you can get a feature-packed forum free.

And by being open-source, phpBB can be modified and re-distrubuted under the GNU GPL licence.

You can get support for phpBB3 starting from Release Candidate 1 (RC1).

There is already an option to upgrade from phpBB2 to phpBB3 starting from Beta 5.
