I only have experience with phpBB and Phorum. I'd recommend using phpBB, as it is what most websites use. This argument might seem irrelevant, but in my opinion it's much easier for the user to become acclimated to a forum that hs the basic layout and functions they're already familiar with.

Also, phpBB has plenty of templates and mods availiable, and that's a huge plus.

I think phpBB and SMF are tied, simple machines forum is one of my favorites, Personally I used to be a great fan of phpBB but after thousand spams I was getting i moved to vBulletinv.
vBulletin is worlds better than the competition, if you're willing to pay for it It is pretty active, Vbulletin is by far the best payed forum software today. The possibilities are endless as far as administration is concerned, the nice thing is you can develop hierarchies of skins right there and they inherit and no users see them until you turn them on, setup is very easy... you just have to follow their instructions and you are good to go it's actually easier to setup than phpBB, which I've setup before and as i remember phpBB does require a few hacks, even the latest version to make it properly spiderable... specifically to get the session IDs out of the URLs for the spiders. I've used phpBB many times in the past and i have been hacked 2 times. I wasn't even prominently on the net but those fools still found me and exploited the bug.
Well but actually it depends on your needs. If you can pay and are in the position of paying, well then go for vBulletin or IPB, probably vBulletin, although IPB isn't that far behind. Also it depends on how flexible you want the forum software to be, if you want to add MODs, and really customise it then well get vBulletin, or IPB.
But. well, if you are not in the position of paying, , there are the 3 biggest in my view, phpBB, SMF and MyBB. All of thm are really great, with phpBB being the most popular. All three are flexible. Then there is a huge list of other BBS that you can use, even flat easy ones which are not as flexible but may fill your needs.

Ah, it seems that every now and again this question is brought up. I've personally used IPB, SMF, PhpBB, vBulletin, and useBB.

Out of all of them vBulletin is my favorite, though it isn't worth the cash if you are willing to do the work mod and template wise with PhpBB.

Following vBulletin for me, would have been IPB, if they were still free, and didn't rape this **** out of my internet. They are quite clunky, or at least were the last time I looked. It's just not smooth enough to be truly serious. Plus, the money it costs is 100% horse crap.

Also on the list is SMF. I'd say, it is one of the best forum systems to use, as it is so, well, simple. Though, like others said, I have heard that skinning was a bit rough. Though, as I never really make my own anyways, I don't know for sure.

UseBB was an interesting experience to have. It was a pretty good system, though there was, at the time, very little mods, or a community to call on. If it were to expand more with mods, themes, and etc, then it would be a better pick.

Last, and at my throat, PhpBB. I use it currently, and it's a love/hate relationship. I've had more problem with PhpBB then any other system. Yet, I love it. The one thing that kinda bugs me with PhpBB is that there is so much work that you have to do yourself. So many holes you could fall into, and so many spots you may need to restore a backup. Though, with multiple communities on your side, and tons of developers and coders there to fit your needs, it is the best choice for a cheep bastard. Silly

I've never ran into any problems with PhpBB, only ones that i've caused myself by trying to edit files, without using a mod (one doesn't exist for what i want/or at least not a stable one)

Meh, i think i will vote for IPB or vBulletine.

Nothing beats those two choices really, i mean yes, other boards are free but in the end the support is always the best with paid licenses, and they actually will have you on priority, unlike some support i know that writes free forum packages.

Having said that, i have used both invision power board and vbulletine an equal amount of time, and i have used phpbb for maybe close to two years.
In my opinion, IPB and vBulletine definitely outplays the phpBB, with vBulletine slightly better than IPB.

But then again, those are just my opinions, feel free to go with whatever you are really comfortable with.

Cheers.

phpBB 3 is a hell to modify. Really everything is integrated with each other.
It's a perfect example of how to not make software easy to mod.

Really? ****, I thought they would have kept the whole platform of modding as easy as possible since that is the bread and butter to any PhpBB setup.

Well, if you want free and easy, try proboards with a DynDNS redirection. Made my forums for my clan quick and easy : http://sgtclanforums.kicks-***.com
EDIT: It appears that the word *** is censored:

Once you learn your way around it, you can do quite alot with it! Im thinking about trying PhpBB after I get this web hosting, looks good and should be easy to customize (I hope...)
