I have a couple:

Pikmin (for GameCube)- I enjoyed this a bit more than the sequel, as it had some difficulty to it. In the sequel, there is no true way to have game over. With the new Pikmin types and powerups, it was a bit easy. A big downside to the original is there was no multiplayer in it. Also in the original, enemies were harder to a point.

Super Mario Brothers (originally for NES, ported to numerous systems)- I liked this more than Mario 2 (the true sequel that was Japan only for a while: which was known as the Lost Levels on Mario All-Stars). Mario 2 was alright, but just too hard and frustrating. As for the Mario 2 that was for North America: it doesn't come close to being as good as the original either.

I'm sure there might be more, but I can't think of them right now.

I liked Super Mario Bros. 2 more than the original...

I'm not sure if this one really counts, but I liked Fire Emblem 7 (just Fire Emblem outside of Japan) more than 8 and 9. Same with Advance Wars, the first of the series to be released outside of Japan, I liked better than the sequels that were also released outside of Japan.

I liked Final Fantasy Tactics more than Tactics Advance. Like my other two games, not sure if this would exactly count, but the Tactics games are kinda like a sub-series of the Final Fantasy series.

Can't really think of any others. More often than not, the type of games that I play are always improved upon in the sequels.

I liked Knights Of The Old Republic better than the KOTOR 2. I never really got into KOTOR 2, for some reason the story didn't get you involved like it did in the first KOTOR.

I don't know if this really counts, but I liked Final Fantasy 7 a lot more than those that followed. I was really disappointed in Final Fantasy XII.

That's about all I can think of at the moment Smile If I remember something else I'll let you know Smile

One that sticks out for me right now is Halo rather than Halo 2. For starters the story was much better in the first. I wasn't really a fan of the bump-mapping they added in the second one either. It looked pretty bad considering the xbox didn't have the best shaders to handle the job effectively I think. The second game to me was all about adding more possibility for more Halo games to make it go on even longer. Also the fact that they made Halo 2 Vista only (for PC anyways) makes me like it even less.
