It seems like a good percent of people here, and a portion of gamers in general: are against E rated games. The term kiddy has been thrown around when E rated games are mentioned way too often. In my view, the only true "kiddy" games are: the ones based on kids television programs, and educational games that are obviously intended for younger people.

I think people need to give games more of a chance, instead of just avoiding games because it isn't full of blood and violence. Don't look at the rating: look at what the game is about.

Some great E rated games:

Mario games (just about any of them), Zelda games, Katamari Damacy, Animal Crossing, just about any puzzle game and so on.

Does anybody really ever look to the rating except over concerned or over religious parents? I know nobody here does.

I don't see where you are coming from Rob. Rating barely comes to mind for me, I judge a game by its gameplay, then maybe graphics and probably a hundred other factors before the rating, unless its a rating for toddlers or X or whatever the rating is for games with extreme sexual nature.

Maybe you are assuming people are dismissing games that are E rated because they think its lame. Instead, I think they choose the higher rated games because they are the ones that often give more of an adrenaline rush and so forth

In fact, as SolidRaven said, I doubt anyone here would care about the rating, unless you need to check to see if you have to convince your parents to let you play it maybe.

Having said that, you picked a piss poor list of games to help bring forth your point Silly How about some racing games, sport games or simulation games? Need for Speed, Pro Evo Soccer and SimCity come to mind.

I haven't seen a case of anyone against E rated games, because nobody cares about the ratings. All the games you mention are just Wii games... so if you are making this topic just because you are bothered that people don't like these games for the Wii then you couldn't be more wrong. Sports games are rated E and that doesn't stop people from buying them.

Also, I just did a quick search and Zelda is rated T.

I agree with krt and SolidRaven on this, I don't care about the rating. I never check the rating of a game when I buy it and I didn't even know what the E-rating was Smile

I was playing a sonic game and my aunt saw that it was rated "T" and she flipped out. "There is comical violence in this game! The box says so! And it says there are explicit lyrics too!" WTF? Explicit lyrics in a sonic game Laughing

Yes, she is one of those overprotective, over religious mothers. I feel sorry for her kids. When they get a bit older (right now they are around 7) I am going to have to invite them over to play some great games... like sonic Silly

Some ratings can be pretty dumb, which is also another reason why many people just don't care since they aren't even that accurate. I have Guitar Hero 2 and it is rated T, and I also have NHL 08 which is rated E. Apparently coloured circles scrolling on the screen requires someone of more maturity to play than a game which has lots of hitting and and the rare fight.

Not forgetting the fact that you can smash other players through the glass barriers Laughing And if you ever play as Buffalo Sabres, Paul Gaustad ALWAYS fights. He's violent...

Maybe it's because of the lyrics in Guitar Hero 2 that made it T. Even music has parental warnings on it nowadays.

The first game that I pulled out of my game drawer was rated E, actually. Jak and Daxter the Precusror Legacy. Let's a pull a random one out and see what it is: Sly 2: Band of Thieves, rated E. Actually, that's kinda strange that all of the Sly games are rated E (E 10+ is the same thing in my mind), since they are about stealing. I buy games based on the gameplay, not the rating. Just because a game has a certain rating, does not mean I will not consider it.

I'd say that (because I'm not at home right now) all of my games are rated M for Mature except for about 4-6 which are rated T. Maybe 1 or 2 that are rated E.

Honestly all the games that have the best reviews, that are available on the consoles I own (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), and that just flat out appeal to me are usually rated M.

I don't avoid games because of an E rating. Actually I don't even bother to see what the rating is. Doesn't matter to me. I'm not a parent. That is who these ratings are intended for.

So basically, it's not that gamers are against E rated games, it's merely the fact that the majority of gamers prefer M rated games not because of the rating, but because of the appeal these types of games have for gamers.

I would much rather talk to my buddies about that crazy headshot in Gears than I would about attracting a Chewnicorn to my Viva Pinata garden.

Anybody that's not excited for Super Mario Galaxy, an E rated game, doesn't deserve to play video games!

Wink

In all honesty though, E rated games are often awesome, and anyone who dislikes them simply because of that is just being immature, ironically.

Usually the E rated games need to be better anyway - the higher rated games can get by on controversy, violence etc.

E rated games don't have that, so need to be good to get sales. This makes most of these games worth checking out.

I don't really understand what you're getting at, I mean seriously mario games and zelda games are "kiddy" games just as are many if not all hand held console games. You also say that games made after a tv show are "kiddy"...Well I doubt the Mario games were made after a cartoon but you can be sure as hell that there is a mario cartoon.
Also there are many sports games rated as E and fifa fans could take over the world if they wanted to because of their sheer numbers. I don't believe that people buy or don't buy a game just because it's rated E.

Personally I don't look at the ratings of games because a lot of games seem to get placed into wrong categories. The only games I refer to are games based on Nick Jr. programs and that sort because games such as Mario are still fun at all ages so to label it as a kiddie game is just wrong.
As for guitar hero 2 being rated teen not sure about the songs it features anymore because I have not played it since February (I know it is sad) but I believe a few of the songs came off explicit content albums so it only makes sense to rate it as teen.
