Our European friends were lucky enough to get first dibs at the Windows 7 public beta. Did any of you guys grab it before the servers went down?
I'm curious to see if the "great performance increases" that people have been raving about after the original beta leak are as good as advertised. |

I was able to get it. Going to try it later on my desktop to see if it's true it performs well on older hardware (my laptop kind a beats the requirements by a long shot).

I use the leaked beta. Performance is awesome, faster than Vista and XP on my Acer Aspire 4320

This is just another Windows Vista really. Same lag, same hardware support issue. Couldn't even detect my Creative Audigy SE right. The graphics messed up if I went above 1024x768. And that pretty much describes it.

im gonna send you a violin so you can cry the same river win windows 8 comes out, and yet still doesnt work with your old obsolete hardware.
i never had a problem with Vista, but 7 beta 1, seems to be much faster than visa, and certainly much faster than the pre beta builds. i'm loving it.
I think alot of others will as well... well the open non biased people

I’ve heard, but not had the chance to test, that Windows 7 runs just wonderfully on low-end netbook computers. Today, I installed the Windows 7 Beta on what I thought would be a roughly comparable machine, an 800 MHz Celeron-based Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) with 1 GB of RAM. The results were, shall we say, less than satisfactory.
I haven’t watched Windows redraw the screen this slowly since the time I tried to install Windows 3 on my wife’s 14 MHz IBM PC back in the early 1990s. It actually comes up with Aero glass enabled, which is really funny when you think about it, not so funny when you try to actually open windows and do stuff. It’s not just dog slow. It’s completely unusable. When you type into a text box, you have to wait for the text you’re typing to render and catch up with you. It’s slowwwww.
This machine originally “ran” Windows Vista, and indeed it has a Windows Vista sticker on it as if sporting such a thing would make it true. But Windows Vista always ran horribly on this thing, as bad as Windows 7 does now in fact. What does run well on this machine—wait for it—is Windows XP. In fact, it runs XP just fine.
So. The moral here, if there is one, is that Windows 7 may really run better on lower-end hardware than does Vista. (I will still need to test that before I believe it.) But it is not magic and does not suddenly make near-obsolete hardware relevant again. Sorry. |

I have not tested it, but I am not going to because it will only lower my expectations. I sincerely hope Windows 7 will be a good OS when it's released, unlike Vista when it was released.
Until that time, I let the Internet entertain me.
Edit: @ SolidRaven, you can't really expect anything positive from Creative regarding drivers.

Actually everything is above the recommended hardware so it should work just fine. And it doesn't. Additionally you consider things like a creative audigy se obsolete hardware?

That's only cause microsoft said it would be faster. Go and time it, you won't see that much of a difference.

Source? Who needs a source? I have my own personal experience, and half the stuff you say never happened to me with over a year using Vista, and so far nothing has happened to me while using 7 Beta 1.
You were being negative without even using it. Just let it go.
If it'll take a decent machine to get you to see how wonderful Vista is, and 7 will be then maybe i should donate some money to it. Just want you to be happy buddy (:

| I actually tried to download the windows 7 beta today multiple times and I feel I would like to post my progress on that. I got 3 different product keys for the 32 bit version all using the same msn account but I was completely unable to download the file. I would click the link and it would load nothing. I read on another website that the download link was only working in internet explorer so that may be my problem. If microsoft is going to allow me to get a product key using Opera and Firefox under Linux and then refuse to let me download the file, I really don't have enough interest to find a way to download the beta test from their site. I'd like to hear if other people had this same problem. I heard it worked fine under internet explorer but seriously this isn't the 1995, microsoft should be producing their website on a browser standard. I may not have been able to download it by the crowded servers but I still can't get the download to start now. |

Have you tried using a spoofed User-Agent header? I believe Opera has this functionality built in and plugins exist for Firefox. Just set it to the one used by Internet Explorer and see if that works.

By the way the product keys work for both the 32bit and 64bit versions.
Both of these links work for me via Firefox, but i use flashget.
Both at 300+kb a second, and only took me 2 hours to download the 64bit version.

I just feel that any major corporation should be supporting multiple browsers. And personally i find that firefox is more commonly used than internet explorer.
Over 7 years ago I took a intro web design class in high school and it taught me to test websites in multiple browsers which was mainly netscape and ie at the time. I think if high school freshmen are taught that, that a well-paid group of web designers for a software giant should be able to do that.
Anyways I am not interested enough to bother finding a way to download and try windows 7. I have already decided to install debian, arch or a slackware-based distro onto the machine I would have been testing windows 7 on. |

The Grinch's download links work for me using Firefox 3 (no download plugins). You should probably try again, mcwkm.

I would want to test it, but unfortunately laptops bought a few years ago come with meagre capacity hard drives.
