When I saw the announcement about this I immediately registered, downloaded and installed this. I only have one problem with it and that's that I don't really understand why I'm doing this and what exactly I'm supposed to do Very Happy

So if anyone could explain to me what the use is of this World Community Grid, please do Smile

EDIT: I just learned from the site that my computer calculates things for research and sends results back to the server. So I guess I just have to leave my computer on without using it to get the projects done? I still don't totally understand Wink

Yeah, I checked out the website, and, from what I gather, it's essentially the opposite of WhatPulse. That is, where WhatPulse records your actions on the computer, World Community Grid's software runs while your computer is idle. Well, that doesn't really make sense, but with WhatPulse you type and stuff, but don't do anything for World Community Grid's software. (By the way, has this plug worked at all? People need to join the LLP WhatPulse team!)

World Community Grid's software connects computers together so that instead of using a supercomputer, researchers can use several regular computers that are networked together.

It looked interesting but too bad (from what I read) they only support Windows.

Check out the system requirements for each of the projects. They've got the specifics for Windows, Linux, and Mac (though, I just skimmed the list, not every project is available to all OS's, but you can still help out).

It's a project similar to SETI (the project that analysed signals from space). You install a program that will run on your computer when its being idle. This program receives data from a server which it analyses (using processing power that your computer would not be using otherwise) and sends back to the server.
All these small pieces of processed data are part of a monster calculation that would probably take ages to complete even on a supercomputer. Many computers doing little work every time still result in much work being done.

To make it more fun and competitive even, the WCG keeps track of your contributions and allows you to join or create teams. This concept is similar to WhatPulse, all the rest is not.

I registered, but failed to install that program. I don't know why an error came out and the installation process ended. Or I should do it again later.

I did google what that Grid is about, but still get no idea what it exactly is. That is a program that let your computer to take part in some complicated calculate. Would that be SKYNET? Or it is turning to be SKYNET. Smile I am watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles these days.

I believe the internet would form a powerful something, maybe something like SKYNET. Then we will be a part of the history. No matter which side you are going to take.

I used to be on the LLP WhatPulse team but I haven't used it in ages, so I just re-installed the WhatPulse software. And I guess it would be cool if Trel asked people to join the WhatPulse team. Do some more stuff as a community if you know what I mean Smile

Maybe Trel forgot his old password since he's got a new account on the new team?

Exactly. It's not like forgetting one's password is a sign of ineptitude.
