I too heard that the ECW PPV was pretty bad. It should be no surprise though, if you were only promoting two matches before the PPV officially went underway, and the PPV ended with more than a half hour to go. But, the Hardyz-MNM match went over pretty well, and the Elimination Chamber was fairly decent. But, compared to a lot of the Elimination Chamber matches of the past, it didn't live up. Personally, I didn't think CM Punk should've been the first one eliminated, before Hardcore Holly no less.
But speaking of ECW, there has actually been a good amount of news regarding ECW during the past few days. On Monday afternoon, Paul Heyman was released. I'm not sure what this is gonna say about the future of ECW, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be good. I'm guessing though that if ECW is gonna eventually fade away, I'm guessing it would still be around until Wrestlemania. Also, just in today, the Big Show has announced that he was leaving the WWE. Even though, for the most part, I didn't agree with him being the ECW champion, he still had a pretty good career, and there won't be many like him in the business, so it is definitely a huge loss.
But the next PPV for the WWE is Armageddon, and they already have 3 matches announced. I know it's probably gonna do better than the ECW PPV, but as of now, the card looks kinda thin. I'm hoping a US title match and a Tag Team title match will be added. _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

The planned matches as of now are Mankind vs Vince McMahon: eh, not that exciting. Batista vs Undertaker: title vs WM streak (with a plan of Batista winning!). I don't agree on that, Undertaker should retire with a perfect WM winning streak.. not be bumped off by someone like Batista. I guess it's a passing of the torch type of thing. |
I've heard that Foley might either do a program with McMahon, or Johnny Nitro (possibly in order to help him get over). There is no better way for someone to get over than for them to have a highly contested hardcore match with Mick Foley. I also heard about the Batista vs Taker rumor. IMO, it would be lunacy to break Undertaker's prestigious streak for an undercharasmatic, chemically overbuilt champion who's slowly declining in popularity and probably won't be in the business 5 years from now (since Batista is already in his late 30s). Undertaker should retire with a perfect WM record, and to top it off, possibly retire as champion. Why not? He deserves it.
It is said that former TNA star Monty Brown should make his debut relatively soon. Some people were saying he might have debuted on either on Raw or ECW this past week (since he was at the tapings), but it didn't happen. I wonder how they are gonna introduce him to the WWE fans.
But speaking of TNA, their next PPV, Turning Point, should be okay. Angle-Joe II should again be pretty good. And hopefully, the NWA title match won't have the kind of ending it had last time. But, as far as VKM's "war" with DX/WWE, I believe they are just mainly putting this on TV, because many fans really react to this. We can't forget that pro wrestling is nothing but a "soap opera", and many fans are just waiting to see if or when something will actually happen between the 2 promotions. That's one of the reasons why the period during the Monday Night War had the record ratings that it had. _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

Just for fun, here's a little thing I found on a certain wrestling page (NoDQ.com). It's for nominations for certain superlatives of 2006 in the world of sports entertainment. Categories are...
| Quote: | Superstar Of The Year
Tag-Team Of The Year
Finisher Of The Year
Announcer Of The Year
Match Of The Year
PPV Of The Year
Breakout Star Of The Year
Catchphrase Of The Year
Stable Of The Year
Comeback Of The Year
Headline Of The Year
Diva Of The Year
Theme Song Of The Year
Babyface Of The Year
Heel Of The Year
Feud Of The Year |
Here's how I filled it out...
Superstar Of The Year - Samoa Joe (Was undefeated and held the X belt for most of the year. Arguably the most agile big man of all time.)
Tag-Team Of The Year - London & Kendrick
Finisher Of The Year - Rear Naked Choke
Announcer Of The Year - JBL
Match Of The Year - Angle vs Undertaker: No Way Out (bar none, the best WRESTLING match I've ever witnessed live)
PPV Of The Year - One Night Stand (great way to re-launch ECW, too bad not much has happened since then)
Breakout Star Of The Year - CM Punk (I see him getting a run with a world belt in 1 or 2 years)
Catchphrase Of The Year - "All hail King Booka!"
Stable Of The Year - DX (as much as I don't like to admit it, their return was highly anticipated, and they've gotten the best reactions)
Comeback Of The Year - Jeff Hardy (from drug addict to Intercontinental champ, not bad)
Headline Of The Year - Kurt Angle released by WWE... signs with TNA
Diva Of The Year - Mickie James (defeated 2 of the greatest women the WWE ever had during the calendar year for the Women's title: Trish at Wrestlemania, Lita in her final match)
Theme Song Of The Year - Christian's TNA theme
Babyface Of The Year - Shawn Michaels (since he even had God as his tag-team partner)
Heel Of The Year - Edge
Feud Of The Year - Foley vs. Flair (two wrestlers past their prime, but was probably the most entertaining, interesting, and memorable feud because of the real history between the two)
Would any other wrestling fans in this forum like to fill this out? _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

| Quote: | | Also, just in today, the Big Show has announced that he was leaving the WWE. |
Big Show is taking time off to heal. I'm pretty sure he isn't completely done with WWE though.
Heyman being released is just taking the easy way out. It's not entirely Heyman's fault for the horrible PPV. I hope ECW just dies already. First house shows were cancelled, next the PPV really showed the brand isn't going to work. Why keep it going? Vince needs to prevent any further losses, and just end it sooner than later.
John Cena vs Umaga is now a match for New Year's Revolution. DX vs Rated RKO is a given, probably in some sort of gimmick match. Mickie James vs Victoria is another pretty obvious match for the event. Like most brand exclusive events, I don't expect anything too special here. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

From what I heard, the Big Show's contract with the WWE officially ends in February, and there may not be plans for him to renew. If he is done with the WWE though, he's had a pretty good career, and I'm sure he can always re-sign if he chooses to.
As far as ECW and Paul Heyman is concerned, I found this somewhere...
| Quote: | Credit F4WOnline.com
According to Bryan Alvarez, Paul Heyman wrote everything that happened at ECW December To Dismember despite what has been reported on the internet. He was responsible for removing Sabu from the main event, the order of eliminations, and Bobby Lashley being crowned the new champion.
It was always Heyman, not Vince McMahon, that wanted to give Lashley the big push in ECW. Heyman felt that Lashley wasn't being used well on Smackdown, and if he came to ECW, he would become the top star of the brand.
On Monday, McMahon and Heyman had a closed-door meeting where they chewed each other out. McMahon was very upset about how the PPV went down, and Heyman was frustrated about the limitations he had trying to book ECW like how it used to be. At the end of the meeting, McMahon told Heyman to pack his bags and go home. Heyman has NOT been fired and is still under contract for at least the next nine months. There's always a possibility he could return since he has had these issues with McMahon in the past, although never to this degree. |
So if this is right, Paul Heyman is probably eventually gonna be back. Even though the PPV was pretty bad, I don't see ECW dying relatively soon, since they have a TV deal going with Sci-Fi, they're just starting to build up their roster, and their ratings are high enough for them to keep going. Plus, since ECW does their house shows with Smackdown now, they really won't be losing too much money (if they are). _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

From Lordsofpain.net:
| Quote: | MTV’s Wrestling Society X project will begin airing on Tuesday, January 30th at 10:30 EST and PST. This will put the show head-to-head with WWE’s ECW on Sci Fi for the second half hour. MTV has agreed to air ten episodes of the project which will combine wrestling and music.
Big Vision producer and former XPW official Kevin Klinerock is handling the wrestling end of the project alongside Vampiro as head writer and Cody Michaels as an agent.
Known wrestling talent confirmed for the project includes Ruckus, Vampiro, Sean Waltman, Jack Evans, Matt Sydal, Lizzy Valentine, Teddy Hart, The Human Tornado, Dragon's Gate stars Masato Yoshino and Genki Horiguchi, Colt Cabana, Jimmy Jacobs, Ricky Banderas, Aaron Aguilera, B-Boy and others.
The bands Good Charlotte, Deftones, and New Found Glory have all been confirmed for the project.
Wrestling Society X was taped last month in California. |
What are the people at MTV thinking? Head to head with ECW is stupid. I'm sure some people will switch to WSX and see what it's about (if they haven't read about it already), but overall ECW will win the ratings here I bet. Unless ECW goes downhill quick by then, which is possible as well.
Remember: WSX fans were told to look a certain way and dress a certain way. That's not what wrestling is about. Wrestling is fake, but the fans shouldn't be. What's the point?
Overall, WSX has some name talent people will know: Vampiro, Sean Waltman (X-Pac, Syxx). But the rest is indy talent, granted... indy is known to alot of people, it's still not a thing that should be thrown on TV without many known stars. It gives them better exposure, which is good... but I doubt WSX will last too long. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

Turning Point is tomorrow. Overall, a decent card with the only noticeable bad matches of: AJ Styles vs Rhino, Ms. Brooks vs Eric Young in a bikini match. I was hoping this would be the pre-show match, but that seems to be going to a tag match between Lance Hoyt+Ron Killings/Serotonin (Raven's new Flock). I hate Rhino, I hope AJ gets a decent feud after the one with Rhino ends. At least Voodoo Kin Mafia don't have a match, but from what I've read... will be at the PPV. So be prepared for more lame WWE bashing skits.
In Smackdown news, Michelle McCool hasn't been on lately due to an eating disorder which put her in the hospital. Since their manager is off, Idol Stevens+KC James haven't been seen lately either on Smackdown. Unless I read the results wrong: November 10 was when James+Stevens were on Smackdown last (Stevens faced Benoit). November 3 was their last teamup on Smackdown I think.
Hopefully Michelle gets better and overcomes the disorder. Eating disorders are usually a hard thing to get through. It's better it was noticed now, instead of later. I think James+Stevens should be on TV though, the tag division is only Regal+Taylor, Kendrick+London. It looks like the tag champs will be breaking up soon, due to their fighting over Ashley. The storyline of a fight over the manager has been done to death in WWE.
I guess Dave Taylor's injury wasn't that serious. Originally he was supposed to be out for months, and now he seems just fine.
Armageddon looks to be final. I think the only matches to be added will probably be: Kendrick+London vs Regal+Taylor for the tag titles and Boogey Man vs Miz. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

Turning Point was tonight (I didn't see it), but from the sounds of it... it was about average.
The bad: The 5-way X division match wasn't as good as expected, Eric Young/Ms. Brooks bikini match was horrible, AJ Styles/Rhino was horrible as well. Too many Voodoo Kin Mafia skits about WWE, Vince McMahon and DX. The whole baseball fight between AJ and Eckstein was pretty dumb as well. I can bet it will be on ESPN, but I somehow doubt it will help ratings with Impact much. Let's hope this new baseball "feud" or whatever they are trying to do, won't last long.
Other than that, the card was decent. Joe/Angle was great: Joe made Angle tap out.
Other notes from the PPV: it looks like America's Most Wanted are on the verge of breaking up. I don't think either could work well in singles, hopefully TNA puts them with new partners... if they do breakup that is.
Voodoo Kin Mafia challenged DX to a tag match: what's the point of this garbage? It's highly unlikely WWE will mention TNA on Raw or Smackdown, so TNA needs to stop wasting time with it. Have matches and wrestling promos, not this bashing crap. If shows were head to head: fine. If TNA was a bigger threat: fine. Neither applies here, so it's just a waste of time. Alot of this is because of Vince Russo being with TNA, in my opinion. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

From Turning Point last night, I only caught the Angle-Joe II match. It was great, but I still think it underdelivered as the supposed "match of the year", and I still expected more. Ever since Angle went to TNA, he has always been promising that he would surprise his fans even more. So far, from what I've seen, he's just been doing all the same great things he's been doing in the WWE. To be honest with ya, I still think that his match against the Undertaker in No Mercy was the best match he had this year.
I haven't really followed the developments of MTV's WSX too much, but honestly I don't know that I will really watch it. Not because I don't care for the wrestlers in there (cuz I actually heard of some of the Indy wrestlers on that list, and they're acually alright), but it is because I haven't cared much about what MTV had to put out since um... I turned 16. MTV has always been one of those stations that I totally can't stand, because they always try to take advantage by marketing most of their shows (which have nothing to do with music) to the mindless young people.
But overall, the quality of wrestling has gone down over the past few years, and that is mainly because the main promotion, the WWE, still don't really put out shows as great as they did when they were in actual competition with WCW. If TNA actually gets to directly compete with the WWE, and puts their show against theirs (which probably won't happen for a while), then things should get more interesting. _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

In some Impact notes from last night: America's Most Wanted is officially broken up now, due to their loss to Latin American Exchange. It seems like it will be a feud between the former AMW members: Chris Harris and Petey Williams against James Storm and ?. Not sure who they could team with him. I suppose if the breakup makes 2 good teams, it was worth it. AMW had been a team since basically the start of TNA I think.
Also on Impact: part 2 of the Paparazzi Championship Series took place. Jay Lethal won it: it was a push up contest. Very lame.
In WWE news: Armageddon is this Sunday. The full card and my picks in bold, as usual:
Main event- Batista+John Cena vs King Booker+Finlay: should be an average match... nothing more, nothing less. I think Finlay needs to be out of the main event picture.
Undertaker vs Ken Kennedy (Last Ride match): Will be a good match, but I can bet Undertaker wins this.
Kane vs MVP (Inferno match): Dud match in my opinion, MVP isn't that exciting.
U.S champ Chris Benoit vs Chavo Guerrero: One of the best matches on the card, if they get enough time.
Tag champs Brian Kendrick+Paul London vs William Regal+Dave Taylor: If given enough time, should be a good match as well. In my opinion, this should be the official breakup of Kendrick+London, since it's been teased for weeks now.
Cruiserweight champ Gregory Helms vs Jimmy Wang Yang: Helms should retain here. As a side note: Amy (Yang's former manager) was fired recently, apparently because she upset Stephanie McMahon.
Boogey Man vs Miz: This should be pre-show match, not the PPV. I can imagine the same format that's been done numerous times: Miz running, getting caught and squashed by Boogey Man probably.
So overall, Armageddon looks good... but certainly needs to be a good show (to be better than the horrible ECW PPV recently). _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

Armageddon looks like it may be a decent PPV. The two gimmick matches with the brothers of destruction should at least prove to be interesting television, and all of the title matches that they have look like they can be really good and potentially steal the show.
I agree with most of Rob1981's Armageddon picks, with the exeception of a few matches. Regal & Taylor may win, but they may not win the titles as of yet. I don't see London and Kendrick breaking up until possibly around Royal Rumble, which could possibly set up a match between the two in Wrestlemania. As much as Boogeyman has been winning since he came to the WWE, I don't think he should win this one because it would be wrong if a Tough Enough reject ends up winning against the last Tough Enough runner-up (despite how annoying either of them are). Lastly, I think "Team Royalty" will beat "Team Champions" in the main event. I think Finlay may get the pinfall on Batista, and I think this will start a program between the two in Royal Rumble.
I missed TNA Impact on Thursday, but from reading about it, and from what my brother told me, it was a decent show to follow the Turning Point PPV. _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

WWE Armageddon was yesterday. I didn't watch it (because of the WWE's last disappointment with ECW D2D), but after reading the results, I kind of wish I did. This seemed to have been one of the best PPVs (if not the best) that the WWE has put out this year. From what I heard, the 4 way ladder match for the tag-team titles is a strong candidate for match of the year, and they only had a couple of dud matches (Boogeyman/Miz and the Main Event match). Other than that, it seemed like a strong card from top to bottom.
Even though the PPV seemed to have been a success, I'm guessing the buy rate may not have been too high, since it followed an extremely awful WWE PPV. Also, if they have promoted the fact that the ladder match was actually gonna take place before the show, rather than throwing it in at the last minute, it may have gotten more people to buy the show. It's also a shame that Joey Mercury severely broke his nose during the match (here's hoping for a speedy recovery). But, the Inferno and Last Ride matches even had it's climactic moments.
But, it's really nice to see the WWE put out a strong PPV. They really need that kind of effort. Even though TNA really isn't a threat to them yet, the product that TNA puts out in their PPVs, imo, has been kicking WWE's butt lately. Now, if they can be consistent with it, then the WWE should get better as a whole. Now, if they'd only give the world belts to other people...
The 3 hr Raw is tonight. It's actually in my local areana, but I didn't buy tickets because I wasn't too pleased with the Raw product lately. But, since it's now a 3 hr show, and they have that big battle royal (with a possibility of Monty Brown debuting), I kind of wished I bought some tickets to attend the show. Oh well. This is the last live Raw of 2006 (since they are airing the Christmas Iraq special next week, and the K-Fed/Cena Raw the following week kicks of 2007). _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

Armageddon would've have much better buyrates, if they would've announced Hardys+MNM being in the tag match alot sooner. Overall: I picked the results dead on, except for the tag titles match.
I'm glad Helms retained his title against Jimmy. When Helms loses the title, it needs to be to someone decent. Jimmy is entertaining and talented, but hasn't been on Smackdown that long. Matt Hardy shouldn't get the title again either, as he is in tag (for now at least) and seems to be usually stuck in either tag or cruiserweight during his career. I somehow doubt he will ever win a bigger title (and last as champ for a while). Same goes for Jeff Hardy (which held the I.C title in the past, but wasn't that great of a champion).
The Raw 3 hour special (which I saw alot of) didn't seem that special to me. The battle royal was a somewhat good start, but not much else stood out on Raw. Edge wins a title shot: loses the title match (which was supposed to be at the very end of Raw), then we get a 6-man tag?! Come on now, DX+Cena is double booked and Edge triple booked for the night (and most other people were double booked as well I think). That's horrible booking once again by the Raw staff. It should've been Orton+Umaga against DX as the match before Edge/Cena.
What's the point of guys like Brawler and Slaughter in the battle royal? A battle royal hyped up as the "biggest battle royal in Raw history" shouldn't be full of people that obviously wont win. They could've brought in some legends people havent seen in a while, at least. Instead of the regular "filler" spots of Slaughter and Brawler. Simmons didn't need to be in the match either. Raw doesn't have 30 regular stars to my knowledge at least, but it doesn't mean the battle royal should be so predictable. Lance Cade lasting so long was a joke as well for the battle royal.
Other notes from Raw: Kenny pinned Flair, which is a good sign... more older wrestlers and/or legends need to job more often (Undertaker+Kane for example..). Cryme Tyme did a stupid segment where they stole from a guy that looked a little like George Bush. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page

I'm guessing the WWE will not be banking on the initial buyrate to see if Armageddon PPV is successful, but probably from the buys of the replays and the future DVD sales. So overall, in the long run, the PPV may be successful in that manner.
I believed that the 3 hr Raw wasn't too special either. It seemed the had a lot of filler spots (the K-Fed interview, the Cryme Tyme segment, etc). If they make a show 3 hours, they should at least try to put a little bit more wrestling on it. I do agree with Flair jobbing to Kenny, but I believe what you said about Undertaker jobbing to younger stars shouldn't necessarily be similar. You can't build Taker up as "a phenom", an intimidating force and master of ring psychology all throughout his career for him to easily job, cleanly, to anybody needing a push.
The Christmas in Iraq show this past Monday was alright. It had to be a decent show, because Vince was quoted several times that this show has replaced Wrestlemania as the most important show of the year. But the big news from the show was that Chris Masters' full nelson has been broken by a soldier with JBL's help (I don't like to call it a "Master Lock" for that is the name of a padlock). But, I felt that the Shelton Benjamin and CM Punk match was pretty good. _________________ [img:5f924247e9]http://obecorp.com.ru/banner.gif[/img:5f924247e9] |

Well last night was the Cena/Kevin Federline match.... and Federline won (after Umaga hit Cena with the belt). I think this was stupid. Why have a celebrity pin the champ? It continues the Cena/Umaga feud, but instead of Federline... they could've used a normal wrestler to get the pin. More media coverage is one thing, but decent matches should be happening. Then fans would tune in more.
New Year's Revolution is this Sunday, I think the card could have one more match added to it. The card as of now:
WWE champ John Cena vs Umaga, I.C champ Jeff Hardy vs Johnny Nitro (steel cage), Tag champs Rated RKO vs DX (non-title), Ric Flair vs Kenny, Carlito vs Chris Masters, Women's champ Mickie James vs Victoria.
The only match I think could be added is Cryme Tyme vs World's Greatest Tag Team. Overall: a bad PPV to start the new year. TNA's January PPV looks much better (and it only has a few officially announced matches so far).
In another Raw note: I could go to a Raw house show in February...but probably won't. I just don't enjoy many wrestlers on Raw for it to be worth my money.
Andy Douglas seems to be done with TNA now, making the Naturals a team of the past. I think Chase Stevens will get paired with someone else, I doubt he would do good in singles very long. _________________ http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
