Hosting Plan Updates - Quick L2P Update
L2P has been using the same hosting plans for quite some time. It is about time we updated to bring us more in line with what people expect today.

The following will reflect the new hosting plans being launched this week:

L2Play:

500MB disk space
10GB data transfer

L2Post:

1GB disk space
20GB data transfer

L2Present:

1.5GB disk space
30GB data transfer

L2Publish:

2GB disk space
40GB data transfer

L2Power:

5GB disk space
70GB data transfer

I hope the new plan quotas and upcoming PBPP system adjustments will help bring us in line with the latest and greatest available.

Thank you all for your patience as we implement these changes.

What has Trel been up to? - Quick L2P Update
I will just say that it has something to do with our hosting plans and the updated will be released "soon".

Keep an eye on your local news folder for more updates.

Asgard was rebooted once yesterday to fix some kernel vulnerabilities, check http://twitter.com/L2P/ for the latest fast updates regarding the server.

PostgreSQL upgraded to 8.3
The PostgreSQL daemon has been upgraded to 8.3 and has been reconfigured for improved performance.

We are monitoring the progress of 8.4 to the latest stable as there are many performance improvements available.

MySQL upgraded to 5.1
MySQL has been upgraded to MySQL 5.1.

This is to resolve compatibility issues with MySQL 5.0 running the patches we usually run. This should also increase speed considerably with the new code and FreeBSD 7.1.

Enjoy. Smile

Knowledgebase updates and changes
After a thorough review of the out of date information, broken links, and spelling errors, the Knowledgebase update is finally complete.

The following changes have been made:

1) The old Knowledgebase has been removed and has been replaced with the new Knowledgebase in the helpdesk.

2) Links in the forum header and my signature have been updated with the new links to the Knowledgebase.

3) The information in the Knowledgebase has been reviewed and partially rewritten to hopefully bring it up to date.

If anyone sees any errors in the Knowledgebase articles, please contact us about the errors so they can be fixed.

Awstats Plugins added to cPanel
The Awstats installation in cPanel will now make use of the Geo::IP plugin using the MaxMind GeoLite Country and MaxMind GeoLite City databases instead of Geo::IPfree which uses a very out of date database.

The databases used are located at /usr/lib/geoip/ with the filenames GeoIP.dat and GeoLiteCity.dat. These files can be used with some scripts as plugins and are updated automatically on a monthly basis by system processes.

More information regarding the GeoIP data can be found at http://www.maxmind.com/

Enjoy the updates. Wink

RVSiteBuilder WYSIWYG Editor Added
The RVSiteBuilder WYSIWYG editor from http://www.rvsitebuilder.com/ has been added as a feature under Site Management.

Please try it out and let us know what you think of this up to date version.

Pay by Post Conversion and Reset
The monthly run was done one day early and was followed by a PBPP reset.

The "announcement" is here:

L2P Spring Cleaning
We've done some behind the scenes cleaning to spruce things up a bit.

Our spring cleaning has been focused on recovering disk space, reducing server workload, and improving server security.

Older Accounts:

Part of our focus in the spring cleaning was removing older accounts from the server that were not properly documented. This means accounts without current documentation such as being listed in the account management system were suspended or terminated. This process was done manually to avoid cases where a website would be terminated by mistake.

If your account has been terminated or suspended in error, please click the Support link at the top of the page to submit a ticket regarding the problem.

Periodic Tasks/Crons:

A new monitor has been put in place to monitor these processes to avoid websites being suspended for overloading the server. This daemon is independent from the main monitoring system and alerts us to the problem after killing off any rogue processes. It will do this 3 times within the set period (secret for security reasons) before allowing the main monitoring system to go through the disabling process.

PBPP/VSP/RDP:

PBPP: Many accounts that were several thousand PBPP into the negative have been set to 0. As always you can submit a ticket or send a PM to LP-Trel (ticket will receive the faster response) to have your PBPP reset. This is done on a case by case basis, but generally this is done with no penalty to your VSP or RDP.

VSP: The relaunch will see VSP used with relation to accounts in a different way than RDP. You will need a minimum of 1000 - 5000 to take advantage of this.

RDP: No updates available.

Second Weekend Update and May 1st Changes (Part 1)
Hi all,

I've put more changes in place over the weekend.

The https://asgard.lifelesspeople.com/cpanel/ and https://asgard.lifelesspeople.com/webmail/ links should work now. The SSL certificate still needs to be renewed for another year (expires in 2 days), but I'll do that on Monday.

Edit (April/20): Proxy compatibility is now working again: http://cpanel.lifelesspeople.com/ and http://webmail.lifelesspeople.com/ (or cpanel.yourdomain.com / webmail.yourdomain.com) should be functional if you need to access cPanel behind a firewall that blocked cPanel ports. You are still recommended to use the asgard.lifelesspeople.com logins above for security reasons when possible.

The UI bug where the page would display a cPanel themed page instead of a proper control panel themed page has been fixed (click cancel after seeing the login dialog on https://asgard.lifelesspeople.com/cpanel/ to see it).

The password reset feature of cPanel also works properly now.

Note: You set the email address for this feature inside of cPanel using a link at the top of the main page inside cPanel. I can't be set from anywhere else as of now (there is no integration with the forum).

I've also put in numerous backend bug fixes that you won't see, but should prevent problems and solve many minor problems (yay!).

Edit: One of those fixes has fixed a long standing bug in cPanel's Backup that would prevent downloading backups already taken by the system. You can now download the weekly or monthly backup generated by the system by clicking Backup in cPanel then clicking Weekly or Monthly.

These allow you to download the backup already generated by the system during the weekly or monthly backup processes without taking up your own account disk space or waiting for a full backup to generate.

May 1st will bring a few changes to the services offered at L2P.

I have been analyzing the services requested as new accounts open, the services used by current accounts (L2Play vs. L2Power etc), and the services requested in support tickets to determine the best way to provide what is used the most.

Starting May 1st the following changes will be put into effect:

1) Backups will be taken less often.

We currently take backups of the data on the system quite often to help prevent data loss in the event of a disaster, but this costs us in several ways including server resources necessary to generate these backup images.

We will be reducing the frequency of backups on May 1st with the exact interval being between backups announced sometime before May 1st. I would like everyone's comments regarding this change.

2) The security system will be setup to disable accounts after causing 2 system faults instead of 5.

The current system monitors the server at all times to help prevent rogue scripts from overloading the server via too many Perl/PHP/etc processes or MySQL usage. This system will currently allow an account to exceed the acceptable threshold (varies depending on system demand) 5 times before suspending the account. That will be reduced to 2 on May 1st.

More changes are pending depending on what happens over the next week.
